Zhongzhi No. 10, a multi-resistant, high-quality sesame variety
Zhongzhi No. 10 was developed through targeted breeding using the principles of gene complementation and accumulation, with 5 varieties selected for composite crossing, combined with artificial waterlogging stress, natural disease nurseries, and identification and screening of major economic traits. The variety passed approval by the Hubei Provincial and the National Crop Variety Approval Committees in 1994 and 1997, respectively.
Characteristics: This variety is of the branching type, with three flowers per leaf axil and four-angled capsules. Plant height is about 150 cm, reaching up to 2 m; it has about 4 effective branches, 100-200 capsules per plant, around 65 seeds per capsule, and a 1000-seed weight of about 2.6 g. The plants are sturdy and uniform in growth, vigorous at the seedling stage, flower relatively late, have a concentrated flowering period, and ripen uniformly. At maturity the stems and capsules are yellow and the capsules do not readily split. The seed coat is pure white, the seed oil content is about 56%, and the protein content is 23.58%, making it a high-quality export commodity. It is strongly drought-tolerant and waterlogging-tolerant, with a high seedling survival rate. Whether in natural disease nurseries or inoculation tests, in regional trials at all levels, compared with the control varieties Zhongzhi No. 8, Xiangzhi No. 2, and Yuzhi No. 2, Zhongzhi No. 10 is a disease-resistant variety against stem spot blight and Fusarium wilt. Under normal summer sowing, the whole growth period is about 95 days; sown in autumn around July 10, the growth period is about 85 days. In national regional trials, the average yield per mu was 61.51 kg, a 6.07% increase over the unified control variety Yuzhi No. 2; in production trials, the average yield per mu was 66.87 kg, an increase of 15.19%. Zhongzhi No. 10 is suitable for planting in Hubei, Henan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Guizhou, and other provinces and municipalities.
Cultivation points: For cultivation, summer sowing should be done from mid-to-late May to early June, with a density of 0.6-0.7 million plants/mu, and the whole growth period is about 95 days; autumn sowing should be no later than July 10, with a whole growth period of under 80 days. Fertilization should be based mainly on basal fertilizer, with attention to the NPK ratio. On the basis of deep furrows and narrow beds, pay attention to clearing the furrows and draining waterlogging, thinning and final thinning of seedlings in good time, and controlling pests and diseases.
