The new high-yield soybean variety "Zhonghuang 13", supported by the national "Institute Directors Fund" (basic research operating expenses for public welfare research institutes), has now become the soybean variety with the largest promotion area in China, reaching a record 10.87 million mu in 2007. The new high-yield soybean variety "Zhonghuang 13", supported by the national "Institute Directors Fund" (basic research operating expenses for public welfare research institutes), has now become the soybean variety with the largest promotion area in China, reaching a record 10.87 million mu in 2007.

Zhonghuang 13 (National Approved Soybean 2001009) was bred under the leadership of the famous Chinese soybean breeder, Researcher Wang Lianzheng of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and was recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture as a national key soybean variety for three consecutive years from 2005 to 2007. It was developed by sexual hybridization using Yudou 8 as the female parent and Zhongzuo 90052-76 as the male parent, and was bred by the pedigree method. Soybeans previously grown in China averaged 120 kg per mu, while "Zhonghuang 13" averages 200 kg per mu, a very significant yield increase compared with the control variety. Among them, the "Zhonghuang 13" planted by farmer Zhang Zhi in Jieshou City, Anhui, reached 307 kg per mu, and at the Xiyuan County seed farm in Shanxi, a high-yield record of 312.4 kg per mu was once obtained.

"Zhonghuang 13" passed the variety approval of the Anhui Province and Tianjin City variety approval committees in March 2001, and passed national approval in May of the same year.

"Zhonghuang 13" is a new soybean variety with high yield, high protein and wide adaptability. It has the characteristics of lodging resistance, relatively good disease resistance and great yield-increasing potential. Among the 12 new soybean varieties approved in 2001 by the National Crop Variety Approval Committee, "Zhonghuang 13" ranked first in yield increase. Its soybean protein content reaches 42.84%, it is moderately resistant to cyst nematode disease, has a low incidence of mosaic virus disease, and is suitable for high-yield cultivation.

Recently, Researcher Wang Lianzheng told reporters that "Zhonghuang 13" can be spring-sown in northern Hebei, Beijing and Tianjin, Liaoning, Sichuan and northern Shanxi, and can be summer-sown in the Guanzhong area of Shaanxi, Shandong and the south-central part of the Huang-Huai-Hai region. Although it has already reached 10.87 million mu, it still has promotion potential, and the planting area can still be expanded in Sichuan, Shaanxi, Henan and Hebei. He particularly pointed out that the cultivation of "Zhonghuang 13" is very simple and easy, and farmers can readily accept it.
