What about Xidou 3, a superior soybean variety for both grain and vegetable use?
I. Yield Performance In 1997, the Chongqing Soil and Fertilizer Station conducted a variety comparison trial in Yubei District, Banan District and Jiangjin City, where the average yield across the 3 trial sites was 146.4 kg/667 sq m, ranking first in the trial. In 1998, the Tongnan County Soil and Fertilizer Station conducted a large-plot comparative trial of Xidou 3 and Yudou No. 1, and the results showed that Xidou 3 had an actual yield of 236 kg per 667 sq m, a 14.6% increase over Yudou No. 1. Through years of multi-site trials, demonstrations, and promotion practices in various places, Xidou 3 has shown that it is currently a new ideal soybean variety for both grain and vegetable use in the southwest region, with high yield potential, strong disease resistance and lodging resistance, good quality, and wide adaptability. II. Characteristics and Traits (I) Growth Period Xidou 3 belongs to the early-to-mid maturity type. Spring sowing takes about 115 d, and autumn sowing about 85 d. (II) Plant Traits Plant height 45-60 cm, young stem green, compact plant type, thick stem and short internodes, upright and non-lodging, 3-5 branches, leaves long-oval, leaf color dark green, vigorous growth, good population development. Determinate podding habit, white flowers and gray hairs, generally 35-50 pods per plant, and high-yielding plants can have more than 100 pods per plant. (III) Pod and Seed Traits Mature pods are dark brown, slightly curved sickle-shaped, large-pod and large-seed type, mainly 3-seeded pods; seeds oval, seed coat yellow, hilum brown, 100-seed weight 22-27 g, good eating quality as green beans, pods easy to shell. (IV) Stress Resistance Highly resistant to viral diseases, upright and non-lodging, large yield potential under good fertilizer and water conditions; stable yield performance is also good under poor fertilizer and water conditions. (V) Quality Protein content 42.14%, fat content 18.54%. Because the pods and seeds are large, it is suitable for use as green beans and has good taste; as dry beans, it has a high yield of bean curd and soymilk. III. Key Cultivation Techniques Xidou 3 is suitable for flatlands, hills, and plateau mountainous areas, and can be planted below an altitude of 1500 m. It is even more suitable for intercropping and relay cropping and for field-ridge beans. (I) Sowing Period The best sowing period for spring sowing is from late March to mid-April. If grown as green beans for an early market, it can be sown in early to mid-March with plastic film mulching. Xidou 3 cannot be sown in summer, because the pod-filling and seed-filling period encounters summer drought, resulting in shriveled pods and seeds and reduced yield. Autumn sowing can be carried out in hybrid rice seed production fields or parental reproduction fields. (II) Sowing Rate and Density For pure stands, row spacing and plant spacing are 49.5 cm x 19.8 cm; in young orchards, 59.4-66 cm x 19.8 cm, leaving 2-3 plants per hill. For pure stands, the seeding rate is about 8 kg per 667 sq m, and for intercropping about 5 kg per 667 sq m. (III) Fertilization and Management Increasing the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer as base fertilizer is the foundation for ensuring high soybean yield. Where soil fertility is poor, apply a seedling-promoting fertilizer at the 3-4 leaf stage (farmyard manure plus 2.5 kg urea) to build a good foundation for high yield. During the flowering and podding stage, in combination with pest and disease control, spray 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate and 1% urea 1-2 times, increasing yield by about 10%. When the first true leaf unfolds, thin the seedlings, and when there are 2-3 compound leaves, finalize the stand, leaving 2-3 plants per hill, and timely cultivate and weed 2-3 times. In addition, attention should also be paid to pest control and harvesting and drying the seeds on sunny days, to ensure a high seed germination rate and good seed color, and improve commodity value.
