Ensuring a bumper harvest and increased income next year: key points for saving peanut seeds

Peanut seed saving

While harvesting peanuts, pay attention to selecting and keeping good seeds to ensure a bumper peanut harvest next year. The techniques for saving peanut seeds are introduced below for farmers' reference.

When selecting and keeping seeds, pay special attention: choose pods from plants that have the characteristics of this variety, with neat branching and concentrated, plump pods, to use as seeds. Pods from plants with the following symptoms must not be used as seeds:

    1. Plants that stay green and mature late. Such plants develop poorly in the early stage and grow excessively in the later stage; not only do they bear fruit later, but they also bear few fruits, and the pods are poorly filled.

    2. Plants that weaken too early. The peanut pods are not yet mature, but the aboveground plant part ages prematurely, and the organic matter accumulated in the kernels is still insufficient. Used as seeds, they will not only have a low germination rate but also lose the characteristics of this variety, directly affecting yield.

    3. Diseased plants. Pods from plants suffering from wilt, leaf spot, or rust, when used as seeds, will not only spread and transmit the disease but also produce weaker seedlings.
