Introduction to the High-Protein Soybean Variety Nandou No. 3
This variety was developed by the Nanchong Institute of Agricultural Sciences in Sichuan Province through systematic selection from Gongdou No. 5. It has a determinate pod-setting habit, a plant height of about 46 cm, green young stems, and 2-3 branches. The leaves are ovate, the flowers are white, and the pubescence is brown. The seeds are oval, the seed coat is light green, and the hilum is light brown. The seeds are large, with a 100-seed weight of about 28 g.
Nandou No. 3 has a growth period of 95-100 days when sown in spring and 75-80 days when sown in summer or autumn, making it an early-maturing variety. It is resistant to viral diseases and lodging. According to testing by the Grain, Oil and Food Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center (Chengdu) of the State Administration of Grain Reserve, its protein content is as high as 47.3%, making it a new high-protein, high-quality variety, 1.8 percentage points higher than the 45.5% protein content of Gongxuan No. 1, the main variety promoted in Sichuan Province.
In the early-maturing group regional trial of soybean varieties in Sichuan Province, across 12 trial sites over two years, the average yield was 156 kg per 667 sq m, a 25.2% increase over the control Gongdou No. 3. In 2000, production trials were conducted in three ecological zones, Maoxian, Leshan and Nanchong, with an average yield of 171.5 kg per 667 sq m, a 23.3% increase over the control Gongdou No. 3. In 2000, autumn soybeans under the dryland triple-cropping system were demonstrated in Ji'an Town, Nanchong City, achieving high yields of more than 100 kg per 667 sq m on average over a large area.
