The new soybean variety Hefeng No. 39 was approved and released for extension by the Heilongjiang Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee in January 2000.

Characteristics: semi-determinate podding habit, plant height 1 m, strong stalk, no lodging. Short internodes, a few branches, dense podding, many three- and four-seeded pods, abundant top pods, lanceolate leaves, purple flowers, grayish-white pubescence, brown mature pods, round seeds, yellow seed coat, lustrous, yellow hilum, 100-seed weight 19--20 g, protein content 42.52%, oil content 19.06%. Growth period about 120 days, active accumulated temperature 2359 degC, a medium-maturity variety. Moderately resistant to frogeye leaf spot, leaf disease rating grade 3, diseased seed rate in grain 1.9%; field natural incidence of virus disease grade 0--1, making it a new soybean variety resistant to diseases and insect pests.

Yield performance: in the 1997--1998 provincial 14-site regional trial it was 2694.9 kg/hectare, an average increase of 13.9% over the control variety Kennong No. 4; in the 1999 provincial 5-site production trial it was 2229.3 kg/hectare, an average increase of 13.4% over the control variety Kennong No. 4. The yields in both the regional trial and the production trial ranked first in the region, with high and stable yield.

Cultivation points: this variety is of the fertilizer- and water-loving type. The best cultivation measures for obtaining a yield of more than 175 kg/mu in suitable cultivation areas are: retain 1.27--1.45 ten-thousand plants/mu, apply a mixed fertilizer of diammonium phosphate and potassium sulfate at 14.24--19.63 kg/mu, and sow from May 9--15.

Hefeng No. 39 is suitable for planting as the main variety in the Jiamusi area (Jiamusi Branch of the Heilongjiang Academy of Agricultural Sciences) in the mild semi-humid zone of the western Sanjiang Plain in the second accumulated temperature zone, as well as in Bayan County, Fangzheng County, and Suihua City in the mild semi-humid zone of the central Songnen Plain. At the same time, it can also be planted as a companion variety in the upper limit of the third accumulated temperature zone and the lower limit of the first accumulated temperature zone.
