1. So-called genetically modified crops are created by using biotechnology to transfer genes from certain organisms into other species, altering the organism's genetic material so that its traits, nutritional quality, consumption quality and other aspects are changed toward goals needed by humans. In our country, genetically modified organisms are still relatively rare. Up to now, only 6 genetically modified crops have been approved for commercialization by the Ministry of Agriculture's Bioengineering Safety Committee, of which 3 involve crops, namely two kinds of tomatoes and one kind of sweet pepper. 2.   2. Recently, news has spread frequently across various parts of the country that soybeans and soybean meal are rising across the board. Relevant persons analyzed that in the near term domestic spot soybean prices will still show a steadily upward trend, for the following reasons.

Domestic soybean inventories have declined. The main domestic soybean production area is Heilongjiang Province, and the soybean inventory in that province directly affects domestic soybean prices. Heilongjiang Province's soybean inventory at the end of January was 3.37 million tons. By the end of February, the inventory of new soybeans from 2001 was 2.7 million tons, a decrease of 670,000 tons. After excluding food use, consumption, oil pressing within the province and so on, the soybeans available from Heilongjiang Province to oil mills in other provinces were less than 1 million tons, and port inventories were less than 1 million tons. Therefore, domestically available soybeans for crushing by oil mills were insufficient, and inventories decreased.

Imported soybeans have experienced a gap in supply. According to relevant import data, shipments of soybeans imported by our country from the United States had already stopped by the end of February. Regardless of whether the approval time for genetically modified safety certificates is shortened, there will be a gap of more than 1 month in port arrivals of imported soybeans. According to our country's inspection regulations for imported goods, the time from port arrival to pickup for imported soybeans requires more than 15 days. Therefore, newly imported soybeans can be put into use by oil processing enterprises at the earliest in mid-May.
