Adding rice husk to mushroom casing soil brings better planting benefits
In conventional mushroom cultivation management, casing soil is a technically demanding task. There are special requirements for the casing soil's texture, soil aggregate structure, aeration, and water retention and holding capacity. In particular, when making large, medium, and small casing soil particles, it is both labor- and time-consuming, and the labor intensity is high. To effectively solve these problems, the author has repeatedly reformed mushroom casing soil technology since 1990, and finally determined to use surface humus soil from within forest stands or paddy field plough layer soil (sandy loam or clay loam are both acceptable) mixed with 5% fresh rice husk as the mushroom casing soil material, which has achieved good results. The specific method is introduced as follows:
When the mushroom mycelium has grown to 1/2 or 2/3 of the compost, choose a sunny day to prepare enough casing soil, crush it, and keep the maximum diameter of the soil particles no more than 2 cm. Then add 5% freshly processed rice husk (note that there should be no rice grains in the rice husk), mix it evenly with the soil, and spray repeatedly with 3% lime water so that the water content of the casing soil reaches about 18%. Then spray once each with 500-fold carbendazim, 1000-fold dichlorvos, and 200-fold formaldehyde solution. Cover with film and keep it sealed for 24 hours, then open the film, and after the medicinal smell has dissipated, apply the casing soil while it is still moist. The casing soil thickness is 3-4 cm, and as required, adjust the water content of the casing soil up to about 20% within 1-2 days.
Using this casing soil method not only makes soil collection convenient, saves labor and time, provides good soil aeration, is not prone to caking after watering, and has strong water retention and holding capacity, but also increases yield by 15%-20% compared with the conventional casing soil method, and the product quality is also significantly improved.
