Early-maturing soybean Chaofeng No. 3: an excellent variety with super-high yield, high resistance and high efficiency
Chaofeng No. 3 soybean is an early-maturing variety with super-high yield, multiple resistance and high efficiency, bred over 8 years by researchers at the Research Institute of Jilin Province Northern Seed Industry Company. This variety overcomes the prominent problems of the past, when large-scale production applications were not high-yielding, had poor internal quality, failed to meet national quality standards, and were prone to pod shattering in dry years, resulting in high but unstable yields and high yields without high returns. In March 2007, it successfully passed provincial certification.
Chaofeng No. 3 has a growth period of 110 days, and from sowing to harvest requires an active accumulated temperature of about 2300°C, making it an early-maturing, high-yielding variety. Plant height is nearly 100 cm, the plant type is upright and straight, with few branches, suitable for high-density planting; after years of planting trials in different regions and at different densities, no lodging has occurred. It has a semi-determinate podding habit, short internodes, dense podding, spiral upward growth, and uniform pod set from top to bottom. A single plant sets over 100 pods, with 3 to 4 seeds per pod. Pods are brown and curved like a bow. Seeds are round, the seed coat is yellow and glossy, and the 100-seed weight is about 25 g. Quality is good: according to identification by the Agricultural Products Testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, the fat content is 21% and the protein content is 39%. The stalks are strong, the root system is well developed, and the nitrogen-fixing capacity is strong. It is highly resistant to soybean frogeye leaf spot, mosaic virus disease and downy mildew, and resistant to soybean pod borer. This variety tolerates poor soil and has astonishing drought resistance. Data collected from trial sites in various places show that spring drought, summer drought and autumn drought have only a slight effect on it, and its self-regulating ability is strong. In 2007, when propagation was expanded within the institute, there was no rain for 40 days after sowing and no irrigation measures were taken, yet it still grew normally. Chaofeng No. 3 fully demonstrates its high resistance, creating an excellent per-mu yield of 390 kg in the seed field. At the same time, on half of the heavy continuous and alternating cropping saline-alkali land, it still produced 130 kg of soybean, highly praised by visitors and inspecting experts.
Chaofeng No. 3 soybean has a significant yield-increasing effect. In two years of trials inside and outside the institute from 2004 to 2005, the average per-mu yield was 368 kg, an increase of 49% over the control. In the 2006 12-point trial in the north, the average per-mu yield was 376 kg, an increase of 38 to 43% over the control Hefeng 37. In the 2007 16-point demonstration planting, the yield increase ranged from 28 to 51%, and on good plots the per-mu yield could reach 390 kg. Its yield-increasing potential is huge, making it an excellent seed source for the cold regions of the north.
