Detailed Explanation of Tea Plant Hybrid Breeding Techniques and Methods
A breeding method in which tea plant parents with different genetic characteristics are crossed sexually to produce variation in the hybrid population, which is then subjected to selection to develop new tea plant varieties.
The selection and matching of hybrid parents determines the success or failure of hybrid breeding and the level of breeding achieved. The general principles are:
1) The parental traits should complement each other's strengths and weaknesses, and the superior traits should be outstanding;
2) The parents' adaptability to local environmental conditions, especially the material selected as the female parent, should have strong adaptive capacity;
3) The flowering periods of both parents should be relatively consistent, and the female parent's seed-setting ability should be relatively strong;
4) For the main traits required by the breeding objective, at least one parent should perform outstandingly, and the heritability should be relatively high;
5) Regarding the kinship relationship and ecotype of the parents, generally when parents with distant kinship or large ecotype differences are crossed, the genetic basis of their progeny is richer, and the probability of producing transgressive segregation is greater.
In tea plant hybrid breeding, two methods are mainly used: simple crossing and backcrossing. The selection of hybrid progeny mainly uses the individual plant selection method, which should begin at the seedling stage. Seedling-stage selection is carried out based on certain correlated traits. Hybrid progeny that have good rooting ability, moderate tea seedling height, more branches and leaf mass, medium leaf size, a long vegetative growth period, strong axillary bud sprouting ability, and strong stress resistance often have greater hope of being developed into high-yield and stable-yield elite varieties.
For the selected superior individual plants or types, cutting propagation should be carried out promptly, and strain comparison trials should be arranged.
