What are the types of tea plants? A detailed introduction to common tea plant varieties
A basic unit of tea plants below the species level, classified based on the morphological characteristics and economic traits of tea plants, combined with their geographical distribution. The position of the tea plant in the plant classification system is:
Angiospermae
Dicotyedoneae
Theales
Theaceae
Camellia
Based on international nomenclature rules and research on tea plant traits, it has been determined that Camelliasinensis (L.) O.Kuntze is the scientific name of the tea plant.
All tea plants in the world belong to the single basic species Camelliasinensis (L.) O.Kuntze. It is divided into two subspecies, namely the China subspecies and the Assam subspecies. The China subspecies is mainly distributed in China, Japan, the Soviet Union, and elsewhere. The plant type is relatively short and small, belonging to the shrub type or semi-arbor type, with leaves that are not large, and leaf surfaces that are smooth and leathery, flowering early and abundantly.
Based on morphological characteristics, the China subspecies can further be divided into two types, namely the Wuyi variety and the large-leaf variety. The Wuyi variety is mainly distributed in eastern China, southeastern China, Japan, and elsewhere; the large-leaf variety is mainly distributed in Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and other provinces.
