Plastic-mulched cotton grows vigorously, so lodging and premature senescence must be prevented early

Many cotton farmers, in the process of growing plastic-mulched cotton, are prone to some technical mistakes that cause cotton plant lodging and premature senescence. The former is triggered by removing the film too late, while the latter is caused by untimely or insufficient topdressing. Therefore, the following measures should be taken promptly: remove the plastic film at the right time. Plastic-mulched cotton has a much stronger capacity to absorb fertilizer and water in the early stage than directly sown cotton. If the film is removed at the right time and field management is strengthened, plastic-mulched cotton can give full play to its advantages; if the film is removed late or not removed at all, it is not conducive to the cotton roots growing downward, causing most roots to be distributed in the upper soil layer,

Many cotton farmers, in the process of growing plastic-mulched cotton, are prone to some technical mistakes that cause cotton plant lodging and premature senescence. The former is triggered by removing the film too late, while the latter is caused by untimely or insufficient topdressing. Therefore, the following measures should be taken promptly:

Remove the plastic film at the right time. Plastic-mulched cotton has a much stronger capacity to absorb fertilizer and water in the early stage than directly sown cotton. If the film is removed at the right time and field management is strengthened, plastic-mulched cotton can give full play to its advantages; if the film is removed late or not removed at all, it is not conducive to the cotton roots growing downward, causing most roots to be distributed in the upper soil layer, and the cotton plants have poor support capacity and are very prone to lodging. Therefore, the plastic film must be removed at the right time to promote downward root growth, and the most suitable time for film removal is the early flowering stage.

Apply fertilizer quickly as a supplement. Because plastic-mulched cotton develops 20 to 30 days earlier than directly sown cotton, all management measures must be advanced accordingly, especially the rapid and sufficient application of flowering fertilizer. For every 667 sq m, 10 kg of urea or 10 to 15 kg of ternary compound fertilizer can be applied as topdressing. For potassium-deficient cotton fields, an additional 5 to 10 kg of potassium fertilizer should be applied for every 667 sq m.

Promote balanced growth of the cotton plants. Because plastic-mulched cotton develops quickly, it is prone to excessive vegetative growth, so corresponding measures must be taken to make it grow in a balanced way: 1. After entering the full squaring stage, use 2 to 3 g of mepiquat chloride, or 8 to 12 mL of chlormequat, per 667 sq m, add 40 kg of water, and spray. 2. Pay attention to timely topdressing after spraying the growth regulator. After spraying the growth regulator, the cotton leaf color quickly turns dark green, but at this time the latent problem of fertilizer deficiency cannot be ignored, and topdressing should still be applied where needed. At the same time, also pay attention to clearing away residual film after removing the plastic film, so as not to affect intertillage and earthing up and the management of the following crop.
