What causes poor growth in oyster mushrooms?
Some oyster mushroom growers wrote in saying that the oyster mushrooms they cultivated were not growing as well as they had hoped, and they wanted to understand where the problem actually lies. Below is a few points of analysis and reminders regarding some problems commonly seen in cultivation:
The first cause may be that the ambient temperature and the substrate temperature are not right. Being higher or lower than the fruiting temperature range of the variety being grown will both produce the phenomenon of no fruiting, or of no longer fruiting normally after the first flush has finished and the crop turns to the next flush.
The second cause is poor ventilation in the mushroom shed. Poor oxygen supply and excessively high carbon dioxide concentration are both unfavorable to fruiting, and when oxygen is severely lacking, it will cause large numbers of mushroom buds to shrivel and suffocate.
The third cause is improper watering methods. If too much water is used when spraying, and it is sprayed directly onto the substrate and young mushrooms, plus closing the doors and windows when spraying, all of this will cause water to accumulate in the substrate, resulting in asphyxiation and death of the mycelium. At the same time, because water accumulates for a long time on the caps of young mushrooms and they absorb a large amount of water, it very easily creates conditions for bacterial diseases to break out in large numbers.
The last cause is the occurrence of pests and diseases. Because the substrate was improperly selected and treated, and the mushroom house, mushroom shed and casing soil were not disinfected or not thoroughly disinfected, especially in old mushroom houses and old mushroom sheds that have been used for many years, pests and diseases are even more likely to occur. After pests invade, they will gnaw and eat large amounts of oyster mushroom mycelium and fruiting bodies, causing them to break apart, lose water and die. In severe cases of pest and disease damage, it will cause no fruiting, or after fruiting the mushrooms will shrivel, turn yellow, and finally rot and die. Therefore, you must carefully investigate the causes and adopt appropriate solutions.
