Detailed Introduction to the Cotton Variety Xiangmian No. 18
Xiangmian No. 18, bred by Zhang Xuelin, Jin Changlin and others at the Hunan Cotton Research Institute, was named after passing the approval of the Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee. From 1997 to 1999, this variety participated in the provincial cotton variety regional trials. In 1997, the average lint cotton yield at each trial site was 134.12 kg per mu, an increase of 7.5% over the control Xiangmian No. 10 and 1.13% over the control Xiangzamian No. 1; in 1998, the average yield at each trial site was 115.11 kg per mu, an increase of 24.12% over the control Xiangmian No. 10 and 12.41% over the control Xiangzamian No. 1; in 1999, the average yield at each trial site was 94.54 kg per mu.
This variety has a tower-shaped plant with medium-sized leaves and good light penetration. The functional period of the leaves is 2 to 3 days longer than that of other varieties. The whole growth period is 123.8 days, with good early maturity, high resistance to Fusarium wilt and tolerance to Verticillium wilt. The gossypol content in the cotton kernel of this variety is 0.0304%, lower than the world health standard of 0.04%. The cottonseed can be developed as a food resource, but its roots, stems and leaves all have glands, which is significantly different from previous low-gossypol cottons.
This variety has the characteristics of good early maturity, strong resistance, good boll set, large bolls and high lint percentage, with considerable high-yield potential. Its cultivation density is 1800 to 2000 plants per mu. Apply flower and boll fertilizer appropriately early, and strengthen the control of leaf-feeding insect pests.
