15 new cotton varieties approved at the national level

The Ministry of Agriculture issued Announcement No. 706 on August 28 last year. The new cotton varieties approved at the fifth meeting of the First National Crop Variety Approval Committee are:

1. Zhongzhi Cotton No. 2: approval number 2006001. Breeding institution: Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. It is a transgenic insect-resistant conventional spring cotton variety. The spring sowing growth period in the Yellow River Basin cotton region is 125 days. From 2004 to 2005, it participated in the regional variety trial of the spring cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region. The yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 235.2 kg, 93.7 kg and 86.8 kg respectively, increasing by 12.4%, 12.2% and 10.9% respectively compared with the control Zhongmian No. 41. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, eastern, northern and central Henan, Jiangsu, the area north of the Huai River in Anhui, Tianjin, southern Shanxi, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region of Guanzhong in Shaanxi.

2. Xinqiu No. 1: national approval cotton 2006002. Breeding institution: Shandong Jinqiu Seed Industry Co., Ltd., etc. This variety is a transgenic insect-resistant conventional variety, with a spring sowing growth period of 124 days in the Yellow River Basin cotton region. From 2004 to 2005, it participated in the regional variety trial of the spring cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region. The yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 226.3 kg, 92.7 kg and 84.7 kg respectively, increasing by 8.1%, 17.0% and 9.1% respectively compared with the control Zhongmian No. 41. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, eastern, northern and central Henan, Jiangsu, the area north of the Huai River in Anhui, Tianjin, southern Shandong, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region of Guanzhong in Shaanxi.

3. Guoxin Cotton No. 3: national approval cotton 2006003. Breeding institution: Guoxin Rural Technical Service Association of Hejian City, Hebei Province, etc. It is a transgenic insect-resistant conventional variety. The spring sowing growth period in the Yellow River Basin cotton region is 125 days. From 2004 to 2005, it participated in the regional variety trial of the spring cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region. The yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 239.7 kg, 92.5 kg and 84.9 kg respectively, increasing by 14.5%, 10.8% and 9.4% respectively compared with the control Zhongmian No. 41. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, the area north of the Huai River in Anhui, Tianjin, southern Shanxi, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region of Guanzhong in Shaanxi.

4. Lumianyan No. 29: national approval cotton 2006004. Breeding institution: Shandong Cotton Research Center, etc. It is a transgenic insect-resistant conventional variety. The spring sowing growth period in the Yellow River Basin cotton region is 125 days. From 2004 to 2005, it participated in the regional variety trial of the spring cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region. The yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 232.3 kg, 91.5 kg and 85 kg respectively, increasing by 10%, 9.6% and 9.5% respectively compared with the control Zhongmian No. 41. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region north of the Huai River in Anhui.

5. Jimian 958: national approval cotton 2006005. Breeding institution: Cotton Research Institute, Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, etc. From 2002 to 2003, it participated in the regional variety trial of the spring cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region. The yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 216.9 kg, 87.5 kg and 75.3 kg respectively. They increased by 10.9%, 6.3% and 2.0% respectively compared with the control Yumian 27. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, eastern, northern and central Henan, Jiangsu, the area north of the Huai River in Anhui, southern Shanxi, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region of Guanzhong in Shaanxi.

6. Han 5158: national approval cotton 2006006. Breeding institution: Handan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. From 2002 to 2003, it participated in the regional variety trial of the spring cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region. The yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 223.4 kg, 90.5 kg and 82.9 kg respectively. They increased by 14.2%, 10.0% and 12.3% respectively compared with the control Yumian 21. It is a transgenic insect-resistant hybrid spring cotton variety. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, central and northern Henan, Jiangsu, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region north of the Huai River in Anhui.

7. Hanza 98-1: national approval cotton 2006007. Breeding institution: Handan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. From 2004 to 2005, it participated in the regional variety trial of the spring cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region: the yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 251.1 kg, 102.3 kg and 96.4 kg respectively, increasing by 21.7%, 24.2% and 26.2% respectively compared with the control Zhongmian No. 41. It is a three-line transgenic insect-resistant hybrid spring cotton variety. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, eastern, northern and central Henan, Jiangsu, the area north of the Huai River in Anhui, Tianjin, southern Shanxi, and the cotton region of Guanzhong in Shaanxi.

8. Guoxin Cotton No. 6: national approval cotton 2006008. Breeding institution: Guoxin Rural Technical Service Association of Hejian City, Hebei Province, etc. It is a transgenic insect-resistant first-generation hybrid variety. The spring sowing growth period in the Yellow River Basin cotton region is 126 days. From 2003 to 2004, it participated in the regional variety trial of the spring cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region: the yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 274.3 kg, 89.2 kg and 81.2 kg respectively, increasing by 13.4%, 15.6% and 16.0% respectively compared with the control Zhongmian No. 41. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, eastern, northern and central Henan, Jiangsu, the area north of the Huai River in Anhui, Tianjin, southern Shanxi, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region of Guanzhong in Shaanxi.

9. Zhongmiansuo 57: national approval cotton 2006009. Breeding institution: Cotton Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. It is a transgenic insect-resistant first-generation hybrid variety. The spring sowing growth period in the Yellow River Basin cotton region is 122 days. From 2004 to 2005, it participated in the regional variety trial of the spring cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region: the yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 245.6 kg, 100 kg and 93.3 kg respectively, increasing by 19.0%, 21.3% and 22.1% respectively compared with the control Zhongmiansuo 47. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, eastern, northern and central Henan, Jiangsu; the area north of the Huai River in Anhui, Tianjin, southern Shanxi, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region of Guanzhong in Shaanxi.

10. Jiza No. 1: national approval cotton 2006010. Breeding institution: Cotton Research Institute, Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences, etc. It is a transgenic insect-resistant first-generation hybrid variety, with a full spring sowing growth period of 135 days in the Yellow River Basin cotton region. In 2004, it participated in the production trial: the yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 221.1 kg, 88.2 kg and 79.7 kg respectively, increasing by 17.5%, 14.1% and 9.5% respectively compared with the control Zhongmian No. 41. It is suitable for spring sowing in the central and southern parts of Hebei, Shandong, eastern, northern and central Henan, Jiangsu, the area north of the Huai River in Anhui, southern Shanxi, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region of Guanzhong in Shaanxi.

11. Hanmian 802: national approval cotton 2006011. Breeding institution: Handan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. In 2003, it participated in the production trial: the yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 183.3 kg, 71.2 kg and 67.1 kg respectively, increasing by 26.0%, 16.2% and 23.3% respectively compared with the control Yu 668. It is a transgenic insect-resistant conventional wheat-relay-cropped spring cotton variety. It is suitable for spring relay intercropping in wheat fields in southern Hebei, Shandong, northern and central-eastern Henan, Jiangsu, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region north of the Huai River in Anhui.

12. Lumianyan No. 28: national approval cotton 2006012. Breeding institution: Shandong Cotton Research Center, etc. It is a transgenic insect-resistant conventional variety. The full growth period for relay intercropping in wheat fields in the Yellow River Basin cotton region is 138 days. From 2002 to 2003, it participated in the regional variety trial of the wheat-relay-cropped cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region: the yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 232.2 kg, 96.2 kg and 85.2 kg respectively, increasing by 19.0%, 15.6% and 16.2% respectively compared with the control Yu 668. It is suitable for spring relay intercropping in wheat fields in southern Hebei, Shandong, northern and central-eastern Henan, Jiangsu, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region north of the Huai River in Anhui.

13. Lumianyan No. 27: national approval cotton 2006073. Breeding institution: Shandong Cotton Research Center, etc. In 2003, it participated in the production trial: the yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 164.9 kg, 67.9 kg and 64.1 kg respectively, increasing by 13.8%, 10.8% and 17.8% respectively compared with the control Yu 668. It is a transgenic insect-resistant conventional wheat-relay-cropped spring cotton variety. It is suitable for spring relay intercropping in wheat fields in southern Hebei, Shandong, northern and central-eastern Henan, Jiangsu, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region north of the Huai River in Anhui.

14. Yuza 35: national approval cotton 2006074. Breeding institution: Cotton and Oil Crops Research Institute, Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. It is a transgenic insect-resistant first-generation hybrid variety. The full growth period for relay intercropping in wheat fields in the Yellow River Basin cotton region is 137 days. From 2002 to 2003, it participated in the regional variety trial of the wheat-relay-cropped cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region: the yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 235 kg, 98.9 kg and 90.2 kg respectively, increasing by 20.0%, 18.5% and 23.1% respectively compared with the control Yumian 668. It is suitable for spring relay intercropping in wheat fields in southern Hebei, Shandong, northern and central-eastern Henan, Jiangsu, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region in Anhui.

15. Zhongmiansuo 58: national approval cotton 2006015. Breeding institution: Cotton Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, etc. From 2004 to 2005, it participated in the regional variety trial of the summer-sown cotton group in the Yellow River Basin cotton region. The yields of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton per 667 sq m were 194.2 kg, 67.9 kg and 63.7 kg respectively, increasing by 23.2%, 9.9% and 11.8% respectively compared with the control Zhongmiansuo 30. It is a transgenic insect-resistant conventional summer cotton variety. It is suitable for summer sowing in southern Hebei, Shandong, northern and central-eastern Henan, and the Yellow River Basin cotton region of southern Shanxi.

The above varieties shall all be promoted in strict accordance with the scope permitted by the agricultural genetically modified organism safety certificates.
