Approval number: Lu Nong Shen 2006031.

Breeders: Jiyang County Luyou Cotton Research Institute, Biotechnology Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences.

Variety source: K321 (selected from Shiyuan 321)/(S45/GK12) F1.

Characteristics: A transgenic insect-resistant hybrid cotton variety. Rapid emergence, robust seedling growth, strong growth in the mid-to-late stages. Growth period 129 days, plant height 106 cm, cylindrical plant shape, medium leaves, dark green leaf color, first fruiting branch node at 7.0, number of fruiting branches 13.8, bolls per plant 20, boll weight 6.5 g, lint percentage before frost 39.3%, seed index 11.7 g, pre-frost boll opening rate 91.9%, hard boll rate 6.0%. Tested in 2003-2004 by the Cotton Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture (HVICC): fiber length 31.3 mm, uniformity 85.6%, specific strength 28.5 cN/tex, Micronaire value 4.5, spinning consistency index 147.4. In 2005, resistance identification by the Shandong Cotton Research Center: susceptible to Fusarium wilt, tolerant to Verticillium wilt, resistant to cotton bollworm.

Yield performance: In the 2003-2004 provincial cotton regional trials, seed cotton, pre-frost seed cotton, lint cotton, and pre-frost lint cotton averaged 247.17 kg, 227.38 kg, 99.8 kg, and 91.31 kg per 667 sq m (1 mu) respectively, increasing yield by 12.88%, 10.77%, 14.8%, and 11.8% respectively compared with the control Zhongmiansuo No. 29. In the 2005 production trial, seed cotton, pre-frost seed cotton, lint cotton, and pre-frost lint cotton averaged 254.4 kg, 241.6 kg, 98.4 kg, and 93.1 kg per 667 sq m respectively, increasing yield by 4.0%, 3.6%, 1.9%, and 1.2% respectively compared with the control Lumianyan No. 15.

Key cultivation techniques: Apply sufficient basal fertilizer, increase application of organic fertilizer and potassium fertilizer. Suitable sowing period: direct sowing around April 20, or seedling raising in nutritional pots in late March to early April. Suitable density 2200-2500 plants/667 sq m. Heavily apply fertilizer at the early flowering stage, generally applying 15-20 kg urea per 667 sq m, and carry out foliar fertilizer spraying as appropriate. Irrigate before sowing to build soil moisture, and water during drought. Generally do not control the second generation of cotton bollworm; appropriately control the third and fourth generations; timely control pests such as aphids, cotton spider mites, mirids, and tobacco whiteflies. Chemical regulation should be applied in small amounts multiple times.

Jinmian No. 38 (original code DR409)

Approval number: Lu Nong Shen 2006032 (approved by the Crop Variety Approval Committee of Shanxi Province in 2004).

Breeders: Cotton Research Institute of the Shanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Henan Kerun Biotechnology Co., Ltd. Introduced by Xiajin County Yinxing Seed Industry Co., Ltd.

Variety source: Developed through systematic selection after crossing 95-2527 with 94187.

Characteristics: A transgenic insect-resistant conventional cotton variety. Good emergence, relatively small seedlings, medium leaves, dark green leaf color. Growth period 127 days, plant height 103.9 cm, first fruiting branch node at 7.1, number of fruiting branches 14.5, bolls per plant 23.8, boll weight 5.6 g, lint percentage before frost 38.2%, seed index 10.9 g, pre-frost boll opening rate 95.7%, hard boll rate 5.5%. Tested in 2005 by the Cotton Quality Supervision, Inspection and Testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture (HVICC): fiber length 29.8 mm, uniformity 85.4%, specific strength 30.2 cN/tex, Micronaire value 4.8, spinning consistency index 148.5. In 2002, disease resistance identification by the Cotton Research Institute of the Shanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences: resistant to Fusarium wilt, tolerant to Verticillium wilt.

Yield performance: In the 2005 Shandong Province cotton introduction trial, seed cotton and pre-frost seed cotton averaged 250.7 kg and 239.8 kg per 667 sq m respectively, increasing yield by 2.5% and 2.8% respectively compared with the control Lumianyan No. 15; lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton averaged 95.9 kg and 91.6 kg per 667 sq m respectively, decreasing yield by 0.7% and 0.4% respectively compared with the control Lumianyan No. 15.

Key cultivation techniques: Plastic film mulching, timely sowing, sufficient basal fertilizer before sowing. Suitable density 2600-3500 plants/667 sq m. Water timely at the flower bud stage and apply nitrogen fertilizer; pay attention to timely chemical regulation; strengthen management in the mid-to-late stages, prune carefully to increase boll setting rate, and spray foliar fertilizer to prevent premature aging. Appropriately control the third and fourth generations of cotton bollworm.
