Crop type: Cotton

Variety name: Nannongzao

Characteristics: The plant is tower-shaped, the main stem is upright and pubescent, brown on the sun-facing side, the leaf notches are obvious, the fruiting branches are slightly raised, the bolls are oval with a pointed tip, single boll weight 5.2 g, lint percentage 43.3%, lint index 7.3 g, seed index 9.5 g. A mid-early maturing variety with a growth period of about 136 days, resistant to fusarium wilt, tolerant to verticillium wilt, fiber quality: 2.5% span length 29.7 mm, specific strength 19.6 cN/tex, micronaire value 4.4.

Yield performance: In the 1999-2000 Yellow River Basin wheat-cotton intercropping regional trial, the average yields per mu of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton were 175.9 kg, 76.2 kg and 65.6 kg respectively; seed cotton was 5.6% lower than the control variety Zhongmiansuo 19, while lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton increased by 4.2% and 3.6% respectively compared with the control; in the 2001 production trial, the average yields per mu of seed cotton, lint cotton and pre-frost lint cotton were 191.4 kg, 84.9 kg and 78.8 kg respectively, increases of 5.3%, 14.0% and 10.4% compared with the control. In field production, the average lint cotton yield is generally about 80 kg per mu.

Key points of cultivation techniques: (1) Sow in the seedbed from April 5-25, transplant at the end of May and the beginning of June; for summer direct seeding and intercropping after the @#@245@#@ crop, sow around May 25. (2) For wheat-cotton intercropping and transplanting after wheat (oilseed rape) stubble, the density is about 3000 plants per mu; for fields with insufficient soil fertility or late transplanting, it can be increased to 3500 plants, and for summer direct seeding and intercropping, 3500-4000 plants. (3) Field management requires stability in the early stage and promotion in the middle stage; sufficient base fertilizer should be applied in both the seedbed and the field, and fertilizer and water management before and after transplanting should be strengthened, with enough water applied for establishment, good seedling-promoting fertilizer applied, and timely cultivation and loosening of the soil to promote strong seedlings and early growth; apply flower and boll fertilizer appropriately early, applying it early and heavily in early July when the cotton plants enter the full flowering stage; in early August, apply one more boll-strengthening fertilizer according to seedling condition. (4) Carry out chemical regulation in an appropriate amount, control insect pests in a timely manner, protect buds and bolls, and promote early boll setting and early boll opening.
