Detailed introduction to the new cotton variety Wanmian 16

This variety was bred by the Cotton Research Institute of the Anhui Academy of Agricultural Sciences and has passed the approval of the Anhui Provincial Crop Variety Approval Committee.

1. Yield level: In 1996, it participated in the institute's variety comparison trial, with lint cotton yield of 96.7 kg per mu, an increase of 26.10% over the control Simian 3; in 1997, the lint cotton yield was 98.93 kg per mu, an increase of 18.36% over the control Simian 3; in 1998, F1 participated in the Anhui Provincial Cotton Regional Trial, with an average seed cotton yield of 234.35 kg per mu across 7 trial sites and lint cotton yield of 93.78 kg per mu, ranking second and first respectively among the tested varieties, and increasing by 12.75% and 13.92% over the control Simian 3. In 1999, F2 participated in the Anhui Provincial Cotton Regional Trial, with average yields per mu: seed cotton and lint cotton were 228.04 kg and 95.47 kg respectively, reaching 111.88% and 108.50% of the control Simian 3, ranking first among the tested hybrids; among them, the pre-frost seed cotton and lint cotton yields per mu were 184.04 kg and 77.04 kg respectively. The pre-frost boll rate reached 80.70%.

2. Fiber quality: 2.5% span length 30.93 mm, uniformity 50.15%, specific strength 21.35 g/tex, Micronaire value 4.9.

3. Characteristics and traits: Fast emergence, high emergence rate and seedling survival rate, good cotton seedling quality, low fruiting branch node, relatively compact plant type, medium-sized leaves, deep leaf notches, light green leaf color, numerous and plump flower buds, strong boll setting. Under a density of about 3000 plants per mu, the number of bolls per plant was 19.04, bolls oval-shaped, relatively large, mostly 5-locule, single boll weight 5.36 g, thin boll shell, easy boll opening, seed index 10.67 g, lint index 7.48 g, high lint percentage, with the average lint percentage of large samples being 40%. Rapid growth and development, strong stress resistance, responsive to fertilizer and water, tolerant to waterlogging, tolerant to high temperature, good recovery ability. The fiber appearance is white, with silk luster, and excellent intrinsic quality.

4. Cultivation technical measures: Sow at the appropriate time, maintain reasonable close planting, and promote strong seedlings and early development. Appropriately widen row spacing; for medium fertility, the density should be 2200-2500 plants per mu. In the cotton areas along the river, ditches should be cleared and water drained in time, weeds removed, soil loosened, and soil banked up to raise the bed surface, so as to promote strong seedlings and early development. Appropriately increase fertilizer, especially heavily apply base fertilizer and flowering and boll fertilizer. Chemical regulation should be used to promote steady growth.

5. Adaptation range: Suitable for planting in disease-free areas or lightly diseased areas in the three major cotton regions of our province: Huaibei, Jianghuai, and along the river.

6. Farmers' response to the variety: After two years of trials and demonstrations in places such as Suxian, Fuyang, Chuxian, and Anqing, cotton farmers unanimously responded well, considering the variety to be high quality, high yield, and stable yield, with fast emergence, vigorous growth, early and concentrated boll setting, easy boll opening, easy picking, and high selling grade. It has good early maturity and is deeply welcomed by cotton farmers.
