Why is the new cotton line Zhongchang-03 so highly favored?
On an autumn day, although the sky was drizzling and there was a Force 3-4 north wind, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of more than 40 representatives from all over the province who came to Changxinpu Village, Diaodong Cotton Original Seed Farm in Hanchuan City, to observe and inspect the new cotton line Zhongchang-03 on site. Although the representatives' shoes and trouser legs were covered in mud, when they saw the cotton plants loaded with 30-40 large, round bolls, they came into the field excitedly, counting and looking and bustling nonstop. One representative counted nearly 100 bolls on a single cotton plant and was tempted to pull it up by the roots. Kuang Dongping, general manager of the Yangtze River Company of China Cotton Seed Industry under the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, called everyone together for a cheerful group photo at the edge of the field.
This on-site observation meeting was jointly held by the Yangtze River Company of China Cotton Seed Industry under the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Diaodong Cotton Original Seed Farm of Hanchuan City, Hubei Province. Zuo Weibing, Party branch secretary of Changxinpu Village, said, We thank the Yangtze River Company and the farm headquarters for providing us with the new cotton variety Zhongchang-03 bred by experts. In our village's 750 mu of cotton fields, despite frequent disasters this year, the cotton could grow so well, which we had not expected. Now, there are already more than 63,000 bolls per mu on average, and a yield of 100 kg of lint cotton per mu is no problem.
According to reports, Zhongchang-03 was developed through directed hybridization and selection using E Kang Mian No. 3 and Guo Kang No. 1. In 2001, plot trials were conducted in Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Henan and other provinces, with an average lint cotton yield of 130.8 kg per mu, 5.9% higher than the control insect-resistant hybrid cotton Zhongmian Suo No. 29. In 2002, it participated in multi-point variety comparison trials, with an average lint cotton yield of 129.2 kg per mu, 6.1% higher than the control Zhongmian Suo No. 29. In 2003, demonstration planting was expanded. After enduring high-temperature drought unseen in a century and multiple waterlogging events, it showed strong stress resistance and demonstrated strong vitality in overcoming disasters to achieve a cotton harvest.
According to field surveys, this line has a plant height of 113.6 cm, 18.4 fruiting branches, a single boll weight in the middle part of 5.5-6.0 g, and a lint percentage of 40%. The leaves are light green, the plant type is open, and light penetration is good. It develops early and quickly, has many fruiting nodes, a well-developed root system, and opens bolls smoothly. It is highly resistant to fusarium wilt, tolerant to verticillium wilt, resistant to high-temperature drought, tolerant to waterlogging, and strongly insect-resistant. Tested by the Cotton Quality Testing Center of the Ministry of Agriculture, the fiber has a 2.5% span length of 30.1 mm, a specific strength of 30.8 g/tex, and a Micronaire value of 4.9, making it suitable for planting in the cotton region of the Yangtze River Basin.
Through on-site observation and inspection and the host's introduction, the representatives at the meeting ordered cotton seed from the organizers one after another. Xie Jiaxu, manager of the Lantian Agricultural Materials Business Department in Zhongxiang City, said, We will not leave unless you agree to give us cotton seed. Liu Dongchu, manager of Jingzhou Nongkang New Technology Development Co., Ltd., not only wanted 7,500 kg of cotton seed, but would also organize people to visit and learn after returning. Relevant officials from the Provincial Department of Agriculture and the Hanchuan City Agriculture Bureau believed that Zhongchang-03 has strong adaptability and high yield and can be expanded for demonstration planting.
Kuang Dongping, general manager of the Yangtze River Company, plans to propagate 4,000 mu of Zhongchang-03 next year with cooperative units, and arrange expanded demonstration planting in 90 cotton-producing counties and cities with more than 100,000 mu each across the cotton-producing provinces of the Yangtze River Basin, striving to contribute to the cotton region of the Yangtze River and even to the industrialization of cotton seed in our country.
