Key Techniques for Foliar Fertilization of Cotton at Different Growth Stages
1. Fertilization at the seedling stage: Foliar fertilization at the seedling stage can promote early development of cotton seedlings, help weak seedlings become strong ones, control plant height and prevent excessive vegetative growth. Generally, a mixture of 1% urea and 1%-2% superphosphate soaking filtrate is sprayed at 50-75 kg.
2. Fertilization at the bud stage: For cotton fields with normal growth, 300-500 times diluted potassium dihydrogen phosphate plus an appropriate amount of zinc fertilizer can be sprayed; the growth peak of cotton plants appears before flowering, and excessively rapid vegetative growth will cause early row closure and increase the shedding of buds and bolls in the middle and lower parts. Such cotton fields need to be sprayed with a growth inhibitor to control the growth of the main stem and the tips of fruiting branches. That is, at the cotton bud stage, use 1.5 g of mepiquat chloride or mepiquat chloride per mu, mixed with 50 kg of water for spraying.
3. Fertilization at the flowering and boll stage: Cotton has a high fertilizer demand during the flowering and boll stage, which is the key period for yield formation. For cotton fields with short plants, underdeveloped root systems and leaves that are dark with a purple tinge, spraying 60 kg per mu of 2% superphosphate or 0.2%-0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution can reduce bud and boll shedding and help produce plump bolls and promote lint development. When growth is not vigorous and leaves are pale yellow, 50 kg per mu of 1% urea solution can be sprayed.
4. Fertilization at the boll-opening stage: At the cotton boll-opening stage, vegetative growth almost stops, leaves gradually age, and the root system's ability to absorb fertilizer and water weakens. For cotton with fertilizer deficiency and early senescence, 60-75 kg per mu of 1%-1.5% urea solution can be sprayed; for cotton fields with normal growth or somewhat vigorous growth, 60-75 kg per mu of 2%-3% superphosphate extract can be sprayed, which both prevents early senescence and promotes early maturity. For cotton that stays green and matures late, at the beginning of harvest, use 100-150 g of 40% ethephon per mu, add 30 kg of water and spray to promote early maturity of cotton and improve its grade.
