How to manage cotton during the flowering and boll-setting stage? Jinnan District Agriculture and Forestry Bureau reminds cotton farmers to master the techniques

The flowering and boll-setting stage of cotton in Tianjin generally begins in early July and ends at the end of August, lasting 55 days. According to surveys, most of the cotton fields in our district have entered the flowering and boll-setting stage. Field management during the flowering and boll-setting stage is very important. This period is when cotton grows and develops most vigorously, and it is a period of intricate and complex contradictions among vegetative growth and reproductive growth, individuals and populations, and the cotton crop and the environment, so it is the period that determines yield. Cotton field management during this period should focus on doing the following key tasks well:

1. Increase potassium fertilizer application. Increasing potassium fertilizer application can prevent physiological red-leaf stem blight and premature senescence in the late cotton stage, improve cotton quality, and increase yield. From full squaring to early flowering, apply 10-20 kg of nitrogen-potassium compound fertilizer per mu as a topdressing. According to whether cotton plants range from excessive vegetative growth to general growth, gradually increase the application rate of nitrogen-potassium compound fertilizer. For thin and weak cotton fields, the topdressing of nitrogen-potassium compound fertilizer per mu can reach more than 20 kg to promote growth.

2. Chemical regulation technology. For chemical regulation, grasp the principle of "light first and heavy later, small amounts multiple times," strengthen chemical control after flowering, shape the plant type, prevent excessive vegetative growth, and protect flowers and bolls. According to the variety, cotton plant growth, soil fertility, and planting density, if mepiquat chloride (trade name Suojie'an) was not applied in June, when cotton plants enter the early flowering stage, use 1-2 grams of Suojie'an per mu, mix with 15 kg of water, and spray evenly. After 15-20 days, in late July, use 3-5 grams of Suojie'an per mu, mix with 25 kg of water, and spray evenly. When there are many rainfall events and rainfall is heavy, shorten the interval between applications and increase the amount used.

3. Integrated pest control technology. For cotton pests, chemical control is the main method, supplemented by biological control. Strengthen control of piercing-sucking pests, with special attention to the control of lygus bugs. Use 2.5% Caijiachun and 10% imidacloprid or 3% acetamiprid 1500-2500 times solution per mu for spray control. The time for controlling lygus bugs should be before 9 a.m. and in the evening after 5 p.m. Entering July, the third generation of cotton bollworm will occur, the resistance of insect-resistant cotton varieties will gradually weaken, and a few non-insect-resistant cotton varieties are even more susceptible to cotton bollworm. Use phoxim 1000-1500 times or acephate 800-1000 times for spraying.

4. Scientific pruning technology. For conventionally cultivated cotton fields, generally retain 12-15 fruit branches per plant, and the suitable topping time is around July 15, which can be ended by July 25 according to plant growth. This year, cotton plants are growing and developing quickly and growing well, so operate specifically according to the principle of "when branches are sufficient, do not wait for time; when time is due, do not wait for branches." Topping of side branches should be carried out in batches according to the reserved fruit nodes. Generally, leave about 3 fruit nodes per fruit branch. For simplified cultivation cotton fields, generally carry out topping twice, namely topping of leaf branches and main stems. For leaf branch topping, when 3-4 secondary fruit branches have grown from the first dominant leaf branch of 80% of cotton plants in the whole field, top all leaf branches on the plant in time. Main stem topping can be carried out from July 15-20. In production, it can be flexibly controlled according to cotton field growth, and superfluous buds can be removed and side branches topped as appropriate.

5. Drainage and waterlogging prevention. The cotton flowering and boll-setting stage is in the rainy season, with relatively concentrated rainfall. Accumulated water can easily cause waterlogging. Drainage ditches should be cleared, weeds eliminated, and drainage kept unobstructed.
