Introduction to the Cotton "Dong A" Genic Male Sterile Germplasm Resource
In 1972, a male sterile cotton plant was discovered in the field, and after 3 years and 6 seasons of research, the cotton "Dong A" genic male sterile germplasm was successfully developed. Its male sterility trait is mainly controlled by a pair of recessive nuclear genes. It has the characteristics of stable inheritance of male sterility, easy transfer, strong combining ability, a wide range of restorer lines, a population male sterile plant rate of about 50 percent, and 100 percent male sterility per individual plant. It also has good yield potential and wide adaptability. Using the Dong A genic male sterile germplasm, 1 derivative male sterile line was developed. Among them, several derivative male sterile lines were further combined and screened to produce 12 hybrid varieties that have passed approval. A two-line seed production method was successfully developed. A set of propagation and seed production techniques with low labor input and low cost was also proposed. The hybrid varieties developed and screened by combining derivative male sterile lines of the Dong A genic male sterile germplasm have been steadily expanding in production area since the 1980s, and the scope of application has expanded from Sichuan to Hubei, Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi and other provinces. As of 1995, according to incomplete statistics, a cumulative total of 610,000 hectares had been promoted, with an increase of about 150 kg of lint cotton per hectare, creating an additional output value of 962 million yuan. The cotton "Dong A" genic male sterile germplasm is unprecedented in similar research at home and abroad. The use of the "Dong A" genic male sterile germplasm to breed derivative male sterile lines, and the development and screening of hybrid varieties and their supporting application techniques, were applied for the first time in large-scale production in our country, achieving great social and economic benefits and opening up a new technical pathway for the utilization of cotton heterosis.
