Observe the growth of cotton bolls and apply the cotton flowering and boll fertilizer precisely

In the middle and late stages of cotton growth, flowering and boll fertilizer should be applied accurately according to changes in bolls and leaf color. Generally, where soil fertility is good, seedling and bud fertilizer is plentiful, growth during the bud and flowering stage is vigorous, leaves are large, leaf color is deep, internodes are sparse, bracts do not tightly enclose the flower buds, few bolls are set, and leaf color does not fade at early flowering, flowering and boll fertilizer in such cotton fields should not be applied early; it should be postponed until bolls increase and leaf color turns lighter. Conversely, where soil fertility is poor, seedling and bud fertilizer is applied in small amounts, growth during the bud and flowering stage is weak, leaves are small, leaf color is light, internodes are short and thin, bract color is light, flower buds are few, and leaf color is pale yellow at early flowering, 5-8 kg of urea per mu can be applied as a relay fertilizer

The application of flowering and boll fertilizer should vary according to variety. For varieties that set bolls in a concentrated manner and mature early and tend to decline, bud and flowering fertilizer should be applied early so that the peak of fertilizer effect coincides with the peak of flowering and boll setting. In addition, if summer drought comes early, temperatures are high, and soil moisture evaporation is great, it should also be applied early to cotton with normal bolls and leaf color. For plots with poor soil, weak growth, and little fertilizer applied earlier, application cannot wait until the flowering and boll stage; judging by bolls and leaf color, fertilizer should be applied early at the early flowering stage. For late-developing cotton, as long as growth is good and few bolls are set, it also should not be applied early, and the amount should not be large, so as to ensure steady growth and early boll setting. Where soil fertility is good and early fertilizer is plentiful with vigorous growth, flowering and boll fertilizer can be postponed until after boll setting when leaf color fades.

The amount of flowering and boll fertilizer should be determined by observing bolls and leaf color. Generally, when many bolls are set, leaf color fades quickly, and fertilizer is applied early, the amount should be larger; when few bolls are set, leaf color fades slowly, and fertilizer is applied late, the amount should be smaller. Urea, which has a long fertilizer effect, is preferable, at 10-15 kg per mu.

The flowering and boll stage is precisely the high-temperature season. Deep application of flowering and boll fertilizer can improve fertilizer efficiency. Generally, it is required to apply it 10-12 cm deep and about 15 cm away from the cotton plant. For plots where flowering and boll fertilizer has already been applied, if a trend of premature decline is found later, 1 kg of urea plus 150-200 g of potassium dihydrogen phosphate can be mixed with 80-100 kg of water per mu for foliar spraying, so as to increase boll weight, promote early maturity, and improve quality and yield.
