4 Practical Ventilation Tips for Mushroom Bags
Mushroom bag cultivation has low cost, high efficiency and is easy to manage, making it a major method of mushroom production. However, when directly tying the bag opening with string during bag cultivation, poor ventilation occurs, affecting mycelial growth, causing contamination, and even leading to cultivation failure. Here are four ventilation tips:
First, the ventilation plug method. Use wheat straw, cotton lint, sunflower stalks, corn cobs, etc. as materials, and tie them at both ends of the mushroom bag to make ventilation plugs. Note that wheat straw and sunflower stalks should be cut into 3 cm long segments; cotton lint should be folded into a cotton column with one flat end and one fuzzy end; corn cobs should be crushed to bean-sized pieces and wrapped into balls with newspaper. The size of the plug depends on the size of the mushroom bag - large bags use large plugs, small bags use small plugs; it also depends on the mycelial growth temperature - when the temperature is low, the plug can be smaller, and vice versa it should be larger.
Second, the ring collar method. You can buy flared rings, put them over the mushroom bag and add cotton plugs. If flared rings are unavailable, you can also make your own from plastic packing straps (cut into segments, weld into rings with a soldering iron), and seal the opening with kraft paper and a rubber band. Note that the ring collar should be fitted securely to prevent it from falling off.
Third, the ventilation hole method. Use a sewing machine needle to poke a row of holes at 6 cm from the bag opening, with a hole spacing of about 1 cm. When filling with substrate, sow the mushroom spawn at the poked holes. Do not poke too many holes, and be careful not to handle the mushroom bag roughly when poking holes, otherwise the bag may easily split during the filling process.
Fourth, the ventilation tunnel method. Use a thumb-thick tapered wooden stick to punch 3 holes 6 cm deep in a triangular arrangement at both ends of the filled bags, then punch a horizontal hole at the middle sowing site, and place the mushroom bags in a disinfected room for mycelial growth. The punching motion should be gentle, do not use excessive force.
