Iris-like Cymbidium Cymbidium iridioides D.Don

1. Flowering period: September to April of the following year.

2. Inflorescence: 1-2, racemose, 9-16 flowers.

3. Flower scape (flower arrow): 40-50 cm.

4. Bracts (shell, bract sheath): very short, only 0.9-1.1 cm; membranous and semi-transparent, appressed to the ovary, not connate at the base.

5. Scape sheath (covering shell): 12-14 cm, 7-8 in total, appressed to the flower scape, connate at the lower base into a tube, gradually shorter upward until the last one is not connate.

6. Number of leaves per seedling (clump): 7-9 leaves.

7. Leaf margin: entire.

8. Leaf stalk scar: obvious.

9. Sheath-like leaves: 12-15 cm long, thickly leathery.

10. Other: leathery and relatively thick, tough in texture, the upper part spreading and drooping (some are also upright and robust), green, leaf surface flat and smooth, the midrib protruding toward the back.

The main characteristics of Iris-like Cymbidium are as follows:

Leaves: 4-8 leaves, strap-shaped, 45-70 (-90) cm long, (1.6-) 2-4 cm wide, apex acute, the joint located 6-15 cm from the base.

Flowers: The flower scape emerges from the base of the pseudobulb through the sheath, nearly upright or horizontally spreading, slightly drooping, 40-70 cm long or longer; the raceme has 7-13 flowers; flower bracts nearly triangular, 2-3 mm long; pedicel and ovary 4-4.5 cm long; flowers relatively large, up to 10 cm in diameter, fragrant.

Sepals and petals are yellow-green, with 7-9 thick pale brown or reddish-brown veins; the lip is pale yellow and has similar veins on the lateral lobes; the mid-lobe has red spots and blotches; the callus is yellow and has chestnut-colored spots on the front part; sepals narrowly obovate-oblong, 3.7-4.5 cm long, 1.2-1.5 cm wide, lateral sepals slightly twisted; petals narrowly ovate-oblong, 3.5-4.6 cm long, 7-9 mm wide, slightly falcate; the lip nearly elliptic, slightly shorter than the petals, 3-lobed, connate with the column at the base for 4-5 mm; the lateral lobes have short cilia on the edges and short hairs on the upper surface; the mid-lobe strongly recurved, with 2-3 rows of long hairs in the center, connected to the tip of the callus and extending to the upper part of the mid-lobe, the rest sparsely short-hairy, the margin erose and wavy;

On the lip disc, 2 longitudinal calli extend from the upper part to the middle, but rapidly become narrow toward the base, the apex relatively thick, with long hairs on the middle and upper parts; the column 2.5-2.9 cm long, curved forward, with short hairs at the base of the ventral surface; pollinia 2, nearly triangular.

The flowering period is from September to April of the following year. It is distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Tibet and other places. It is also distributed in northern India, Bhutan, Nepal and other places.

This species is similar to Cymbidium hookerianum, but the pseudobulb is slightly larger, the sepals and petals are equal in width, the perianth is yellow-brown, and the lip does not change much after pollination, so it is easy to distinguish.
