What are the cultivation methods and precautions for banana shrub (Michelia figo)?
Banana shrub is an evergreen shrub. Flowers are solitary in the leaf axils, with 6 petals shaped like half an eggshell, creamy white to creamy yellow, fleshy, and not fully opening even when in full bloom. It has a strong banana-like fragrance, and the flowering period is from April to June.
Cultivation methods for banana shrub: For the soil, mix 5 parts leaf mold, 3 parts garden soil, 2 parts compost soil, and 1 part sandy soil thoroughly. Banana shrub has fleshy roots and is prone to root rot when waterlogged, so watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and keeping it moist when wet. Generally, in spring and autumn, water once every 1~2 days; in summer, water once each morning and evening every day; in winter, water once every 5~7 days. In hot, sunny, and dry weather, in addition to watering twice a day, it is also necessary to spray water on the leaves and tip out accumulated water from the flower pot to prevent root rot.
Although banana shrub likes fertilizer, since base fertilizer has already been applied in the potting soil, it should not be fertilized too much during the growing period. Generally, starting from early May, apply diluted liquid fertilizer as a top dressing once every 10~15 days. July to August is the flower bud formation period, and it is appropriate to apply more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. When applying liquid fertilizer, it is best to alternate between fertilizer water and alum fertilizer water to meet the nutrients needed for plant growth and keep the potting soil acidic. In the north, stop fertilizing from late September.
After summer begins, potted plants should be placed on east-facing windowsills or balconies, and direct sun exposure must be avoided. In summer, move them to a shade shed or under the shade of a large tree to prevent strong direct light. In early spring, late autumn, and winter, sufficient light should be given so that the branches and leaves grow robustly and the flowers are plentiful and fragrant. Banana shrub is not cold-tolerant, and in the north it should be brought indoors around the time of cold dew. To meet its growth needs, repot once each year in spring after flowering and before new leaves grow. When repotting, cut off rotten roots and thin out some overly dense, slender, and weak branches, and add new culture soil.
