Is impatiens easy to grow? Answer: Yes, it is. Now that we have answered that impatiens is easy to grow, next we will explain how to grow impatiens, as a reference for flower lovers growing impatiens for the first time.

Impatiens is an annual herbaceous plant with many colors, including pink, bright red, purple, white-yellow, wine-gold, and more; it varies easily, and some varieties can bear flowers of several colors on the same plant. Impatiens must be seed-saved every year, then sown again the following year in spring and autumn (March and September); the timing is not mandatory, and even sowing in April is fine. From sowing to flowering takes about 2-3 months, and the flowering period can last about two months. Flower lovers should take care to collect the seeds, because when the impatiens seeds mature, the pods split open on their own and fling the seeds out.

Impatiens likes sunlight, fears wetness, tolerates heat but not cold, and prefers loose, fertile soil; it can also grow in relatively poor soil. So when growing it in pots, flower lovers should keep the growing environment well lit. In summer, watering can be once a day; watch the moisture of the potting soil and do not let water accumulate. In summer, because of the intense heat, impatiens is sometimes wilted by the sun, and it recovers after watering.

1. It changes face, has many names, and makes people unable to touch it. Impatiens, also called tougucao, jinfenghua, sajinhua, jijicao, zhijiahua, jixingzi, hainahua, fake peach blossom, xiaotaohong, xiaodianhong, zhijiacao, and chicken-claw flower.

2. Even with many identities, it has only one appearance. The body of impatiens has six parts: root, stem, leaf, flower, fruit, and seed. It has soft hairs or is nearly smooth. The leaves are alternate, broadly or narrowly lanceolate, up to about 10 cm long, with a gradually pointed tip, sharply toothed edges, and a wedge-shaped base; there are several pairs of glands near the leaf stalk. Its flowers are shaped like butterflies, and the flower colors include pink, bright red, purple, white-yellow, sprinkled gold, and more; it varies easily. Some varieties can bear flowers of several colors on the same plant. Impatiens is mostly single-petaled; the double-petaled form is called fengqiuhua. According to ancient flower records, there were more than 200 varieties of impatiens, and many are now lost. Because impatiens varies easily, artificial cultivation and selection have produced some good varieties, such as Wuse Dangtou Feng, whose flowers grow at the top of the stem and are large and brightly colored, as well as Shiyangjin and others. According to different flower shapes, it can also be divided into rose type, camellia type, dianthus type, and so on. The flowering period of impatiens is June-August. It bears capsules; the capsules are spindle-shaped, have white down, and when mature split open into 5 curling valves; the seeds are numerous, spherical, black, and peach-shaped. When mature, the outer shell bursts open on its own and flings the seeds out, self-sowing and propagating, so seeds must be collected in time.

3. Behind it there are many beautiful stories. From ancient times to the present, many poets have written beautiful lines about impatiens. For example, Yang Weizhen of the Yuan Dynasty wrote "Impatiens" like this: On a golden plate with dew I pound the immortal flower, to free the slender jade for leisure. A little sorrow seems like a parrot's beak, ten parts of spring rise on the peony bud. Tenderly flicking powder tears, tossing red beans, playfully pinching flower branches, threading crimson clouds. When female companions meet, they keep asking, several times mistaking it for the palace-guard cinnabar. You can see how wonderfully it is written, with the charm of a young girl, the thoughts of a parrot, and the sorrow of a beauty. In Dream of the Red Chamber, there is a saying: "Before seeing the person, you hear the voice; this is Xue Baochai." I should say, before seeing its appearance, you know its look; this is impatiens. It can be seen that what is described here is clear at a glance, and so beautiful.

How to Care for Impatiens

First, cultivation is the foundation of care, and care is the follow-up work of cultivation. Therefore, if we want to care well for impatiens, we must first cultivate it well. Let us start from its living habits.

Impatiens likes sunny terrain and loose, fertile soil, and can also grow in relatively poor soil. From the initial 8 cm, when it grows to 20-30 cm, pinch the growing tips. After planting out, the main stem of the plant should be topped to strengthen its branching ability and make the plant shape full. After 5 leaves, apply once every half month with decomposed dilute human manure and urine, etc., and apply phosphate fertilizer and plant ash once before and after budding. After the flowers open, cut off the flower bases so that they do not set seed, and then the flowers will bloom more abundantly; remove flowers at the base at any time, which will encourage the tops of the branches to bloom one after another, but it is prone to variation.

Therefore, in future care we must always remember these basic requirements; only then will it be beneficial to its growth.

Second, the care of impatiens needs attention in the following aspects.

1. Reasonable light and temperature. Impatiens likes light and also tolerates shade, and needs to receive at least 4 hours of scattered sunlight every day. In summer, shade it to prevent excessively high temperatures and blazing sun exposure. The suitable growing temperature is 16-26°C, and the environmental temperature during the flowering period should be kept above 10°C. In winter it should be moved into a greenhouse to prevent freezing.

2. Watering and fertilizing require attention to details. After planting out, water promptly. During the growing period, pay attention to watering and often keep the potting soil moist; especially in summer, water more, but do not let water accumulate or the soil remain overly wet for a long time. If there is a lot of rain, pay attention to drainage and flood prevention, otherwise the roots and stems easily rot. After planting out, fertilize frequently, and take special care not to let it alternate between dry and wet. In summer, never water wilted plants under the blazing sun. Especially during the flowering period, it must not suffer drought, otherwise it easily drops flowers.

3. The flowering period must be well controlled. If you want to delay the flowering period, you can sow in early July. You can also use the pinching method, while removing early-opening flowers and flower buds, so that the plant keeps growing larger, and topdress once every 15-20 days. After September, more flower buds will form, so that they bloom on National Day.

Third, the pests and diseases impatiens encounters are somewhat different from those of other plants, and this must be handled differently.

1. Impatiens powdery mildew.

Symptoms: This disease mainly occurs on leaves and tender shoots. It generally begins in June, and after July the leaf surface is covered with a white powdery layer. Subsequently, small yellow granules form in the white powdery layer, and the color gradually deepens, finally becoming dark brown.

Transmission route: The pathogen overwinters in diseased plant residues and seeds. The next year, when the environment is suitable, the pathogen spreads via wind and rain. August-September is the peak period of the disease.

Prevention and control methods: First, do not plant too densely, provide appropriate ventilation, strengthen fertilizer and water management, and enhance the plant's disease resistance. Remove diseased leaves and diseased plants, destroy them in a centralized way, and reduce the source of infection. Then, during the disease period, use 15% triadimefon wettable powder at 1000-1200 times dilution, or 70% thiophanate-methyl wettable powder at 1000 times dilution for control. Avoid spraying at high temperatures above 32°C to prevent phytotoxicity.
