Autumn has arrived, and temperatures are gradually dropping. The fleshy roots of Canna Lilies are prone to frost damage at low temperatures. Therefore, before winter arrives, you should make full preparations for overwintering. Based on personal experience, the following methods can ensure safe overwintering.

Around the time of Frost's Descent, after the above-ground parts of locally planted Canna Lilies die back, cut off the dead leaves, dig out the underground rhizomes, let them dry slightly, and place them against the north-facing wall at home using the stratification method. With this method, you must regularly check whether the humidity is too high and whether the temperature is too low or too high, to prevent rot and premature sprouting.

Around the time of Frost's Descent, on a clear day, cut off the dead above-ground parts of locally planted Canna Lilies and let the wounds dry naturally. In the evening, use a shovel to turn the soil within a 30 cm radius around the roots, mix in some well-rotted compost, and pile up a small mound of soil to cover the underground parts. This method mainly takes advantage of the loose, well-aerated nature of rotted compost and its ability to release heat when damp, providing insulation.

Treat the plants as described above, but do not turn the soil around the roots and do not use compost. Instead, cover the roots with sawdust, dry rice straw, weeds, etc., and then spread a thin layer of soil over the mulch.

After the above-ground parts wither, remove the dead branches and rotting leaves, and directly cover with plant ash or mix it into the soil around the roots. This also achieves a good insulation effect for overwintering.

For potted Canna Lilies, after the flowers fade, remove the dead leaves, store the underground parts in the original pot, and place the pot directly in a humid, dark environment at 2-5°C.

Overwintering methods for Canna Lilies - direct burying

How should Canna Lilies overwinter? In fact, different regions have different overwintering methods. Basically, in areas south of the Yangtze River, because light and temperature are relatively suitable, they can overwinter outdoors. But in areas north of the Yangtze River, both temperature and light are relatively poor. When growing Canna Lilies, note that you need to take certain overwintering measures.

The specific overwintering method is: before Frost's Descent, cut off the old Canna Lily plants from the lower part of the stem, then apply some plant ash to the wounds and let them dry. After about 3 days, when the wounds have dried, you can cover them with a layer of rice straw for warmth, which can protect them from frost damage. In addition, it also helps retain moisture. Besides rice straw, you can also directly cover them with soil, but make sure the plants can still breathe.

In the spring of the following year, after the soil thaws, you can remove the covering, but keep one layer to prevent a late spring cold snap. In March and April, they can sprout.

Overwintering methods for Canna Lilies - digging up and storing

In northern regions, if the winter is very cold, even covering and storing Canna Lilies may still allow them to freeze, so you can dig up the underground rhizomes and store them as a way to overwinter.

After the above-ground parts of Canna Lilies wither, cut them all off, then dig out the rhizomes. After drying them in the sun, bury them in a ventilated indoor place, cover them with sandy soil, maintain a temperature above 5°C, and do not water. They will then overwinter safely.

Alternatively, choose a wind-sheltered, sunny spot outdoors, dig a pit and bury them. The depth is generally about 1 m to 1.5 m. Fill with some rice straw and soil, and they will overwinter safely.

In the spring of the following year, after temperatures rise, you can take them out for planting.

Methods for storing Canna Lily rhizomes over winter

Canna Lilies originated in tropical America, and their underground rhizomes are extremely intolerant of cold. Every year after autumn, before the early frost arrives, they should be dug up as early as possible. Cut off the above-ground foliage, shake off the soil, spread them flat on the ground first, dry the exterior and fibrous roots in the sun, and put them in a cellar. Because the cellar temperature is relatively stable and also relatively humid, the rhizomes can be stored for a suitably longer time. Before storage, soak the rhizomes in a 100-fold solution of Xin Gaozhi Mo to prevent wound rot, mutual infection, and to provide cold resistance and insulation, extending the storage period.
