The Peace Lily, also called the white sail, has pure white flowers and is a beautiful ornamental plant with an auspicious meaning, deeply loved by flower enthusiasts. When it comes to indoor plant propagation, everyone thinks of cuttings, so can a Peace Lily be propagated by cuttings? To become a true flower lover, besides mastering the care methods for Peace Lilies, you should also know how to propagate them. Below are the three main propagation methods for Peace Lilies; division is the most practical, so let's take a look.

1. Can a Peace Lily be propagated by cuttings? No

Among the flowers introduced earlier, almost all can be propagated by cuttings, but the Peace Lily is very special: it readily produces suckers, and cuttings tend to die easily, so division is mostly used for propagation. Since the answer to whether a Peace Lily can be propagated by cuttings is no, below are three commonly used Peace Lily propagation methods, with specific steps as follows:

(1) Peace Lily propagation by division

① Timing

Dividing a Peace Lily is actually quite easy in theory, but to achieve a high survival rate, choosing the right time is also key. Generally, division can be done around May each year; other months are also possible, but it is best to avoid seasons that are too cold or too hot.

② Removing the pot and soil

A vigorously growing Peace Lily can be divided about once every 2 years. At this point, flower enthusiasts should first take the entire Peace Lily out of the pot (stop watering 2 days in advance so the potting soil is not sticky), and carefully remove the potting soil. For safety, if it does not affect division, try to keep some soil on the roots, as this can prevent wilting after repotting.

③ Starting the division

Generally speaking, a Peace Lily will not sprout before it is fully mature, so the growing points are often deliberately damaged. Each small clump should ideally have more than 3 stems and buds, and should carry as many roots as possible, so that the new plants can quickly send out new leaves and develop a full shape. When the new shoots grow to about 15 cm, cut them apart and insert them in coarse sand, then wait for them to take root.

Key points: Cut the rhizome apart from the base of the clump; each clump should have several leaves. After dividing and planting, water thoroughly and place in semi-shade to recover; never place in direct sun and do not fertilize. Note here that when cutting, you should include a section of stem, then apply charcoal ash to the wound to prevent rot. Once the root system returns to normal, proceed with regular care.

(2) Tissue culture method

At home, division can be used, but traditional Peace Lily division simply cannot meet market demand, and now tissue culture can be successfully used to rapidly propagate its seedlings. Generally, with tissue culture, the plants are first grown in plastic pots, and after they grow 4-5 leaves they are divided and replanted; after 3-4 rounds of repotting and transplanting, when the seedlings are 30 cm tall they are planted conventionally, then managed with conventional cultivation practices.

(3) Seed propagation method

Seed propagation is also one of the main propagation methods for Peace Lilies and is often used at growing facilities, but it has one difficulty: it requires hand pollination, and many people run into problems here. So it needs to be specially explained: the white thin sheet-like part is not the flower; the protruding part in the middle is the flower, so the flower is relatively small. When the flower has pollen, use a clean brush to dab it on the flower to complete pollination.

Care after propagation

After Peace Lilies are propagated, care is very important. Peace Lilies do not like strong light and need appropriate shading; in seasons with relatively strong light, shading out 60%-70% of sunlight is best. Too strong light easily scorches the leaves; too dark, and the leaves grow leggy and the plant grows poorly. In winter, generally full light can be given.

That's all the editor has to introduce about Peace Lily propagation methods. Although division is a bit more troublesome than cuttings, as long as we operate properly, even beginners can do it. If you only have one pot of Peace Lily, sometimes it does look a bit monotonous, but once you master division propagation, none of that is a problem. As long as everyone gives it a try, turning one pot into ten will become a reality.

September! The best month for plant propagation - sowing, cuttings, grafting, division, and layering are all worth trying~

September is coming soon, and it is a very delightful month. For flower enthusiasts, this season, neither cold nor hot and very suitable for plant growth, is also a great time for sowing, cuttings, grafting, division, and layering. So come and get started with Huahua!

Sowing

Flowers that can be sown in autumn include: hollyhock, dianthus, tall catchfly, dwarf catchfly, pansy, snapdragon, petunia, daisy, corn poppy, calendula, black-eyed Susan, iris, verbena, and others.

In addition, greenhouse flowers such as cyclamen, primrose, nasturtium, cineraria, wax begonia, gerbera, and calceolaria can also be sown at this time, but they need to overwinter in a plastic tunnel.

Using petunia as an example, Huahua's specific operation method is as follows:

1. Mix peat soil, leaf mold, and perlite thoroughly in a 1:1:1 ratio, then pour into a seedling tray, pressing down lightly while pouring.

2. Make a carbendazim solution by mixing carbendazim with water at 800 times. First water the soil in the seedling tray with the carbendazim solution, then pour water into the outer seedling box, soaking the seedling tray in water for a day and a night. After soaking, let the potting soil air for 2-3 hours.

3. The suitable temperature for sowing is around 20-25 degrees. Before sowing, water the potting soil once with clean water to ensure the carbendazim does not harm the seeds. Petunia seeds are very small; you can use a spoon or a toothpick (dipped in water) to scoop (pick up) one seed and place it on the soil surface. Note that one seed per pot is enough!

4. Pour some clean water into the bottom of the large seedling box, with the water level reaching about half a centimeter up the bottom of the small seedling pots.

5. Cover with a lid or plastic wrap and place in a spot with bright indirect light and good ventilation! Add water when it runs out, and after 7-10 days they will germinate; after germination, gradually expose them to sunlight.

Cuttings

Woody flowers that can be propagated by cuttings in autumn include: purple magnolia, spiraea, pomegranate, hibiscus, crape myrtle, hydrangea, fig, oleander, serissa, gardenia, fatsia, Chaenomeles speciosa, peony, and others.

Some herbaceous flowers can also be propagated by cuttings, such as salvia, globe amaranth, marigold, and others.

Using hydrangea as an example, Huahua's specific operation method is as follows:

1. Prepare materials.

Choose a healthy, relatively strong branch. The medium can be finer vermiculite, fine seedling peat, and so on. Use a utility knife or similar if possible; do not use scissors, because the wound made by scissors is a crushed wound, unlike the slice made by a knife.

2. Make a slanted cut about one inch, that is, three to five centimeters, below the node.

3. Make a flat cut above the node, keeping the bud.

4. Cut off about two-thirds or one-half of the leaf. It depends on leaf size: leave less for large leaves and more for small leaves.

5. Before inserting the cutting, sterilize the potting soil once with potassium permanganate or carbendazim. Then water the medium thoroughly so it absorbs enough water. Insert the cutting into the potting soil, with the part below the node fully inserted. Finally, place the pot in a tray with water and mist frequently to maintain moisture. (Remember, do not put it under strong sun.)

6. At the current temperature, rooting takes about twenty days, and after basically one month it can be pulled out and potted up.

Grafting

Flowers and trees that can be grafted in autumn include: using peony root sections as rootstock to graft improved peony varieties; using cactus as rootstock to graft improved Christmas cactus; using Euphorbia tirucalli as rootstock to graft crown of thorns, and so on.

Using a current-year peach seedling as the rootstock and a green plum branch as the scion, Huahua's specific operation method is as follows:

1. The mother plant should be chosen as one that blooms profusely and has a robust tree form, and plump, well-growing buds should be cut from it.

2. With the three-cut bud removal method, cut a shield shape about one centimeter around the selected bud, with the lower part slightly longer than the upper part.

3. Use a fingernail to peel out the graft bud from outside to inside; after removing the bud, it can be placed in water to prevent dehydration.

4. At a smooth spot 10 to 15 centimeters from the base of the rootstock, use a knife to cut a T shape, slightly longer than the graft bud, and use the back of the knife or a fingernail to lift open the bark.

5. Insert the graft bud and wrap it with plastic film.

Layering

Ornamental flowers and trees that can be propagated by layering include: Chaenomeles speciosa, weigela, hydrangea, gardenia, oleander, winter jasmine, Forsythia viridissima, osmanthus, purple magnolia, jasmine, Michelia figo, camellia, Chloranthus, French holly, snowball viburnum, Chinese snowball, Spiraea thunbergii, spiraea, and others.

Using gardenia as a specific example, Huahua's operation method is as follows:

1. Select a branch you like; it can be an extra part that needs to be cut off, or a healthy, well-growing curved branch.

2. Use a sharp small knife to make a ring cut in the bark on the branch, then peel off the bark in a ring. The width should be 1-2 centimeters.

3. Make a drink bottle into a funnel shape, cut it open in the middle, fit it over the ringed area, and tie it securely with metal wire.

4. Put potting soil and other water-retaining materials into the drink bottle, wrap the top and bottom with transparent film, and try to ensure no water leaks and no soil is exposed. Afterward, add a little water every few days to maintain humidity, and wait patiently; roots usually form in 2-3 months.

5. After the root system is well developed, cut off the branch and plant it directly!  6. Air layering succeeded; cut it off and pot it up.

The advantages of air layering propagation compared with cutting propagation are:
1. It can directly propagate thicker branches.
2. It has a high safety margin; even if rooting is unsuccessful, the branch will not die.

Division

Plants that can be divided in autumn include: Cymbidium goeringii, Cymbidium faberi, Cymbidium ensifolium, peony, tree peony, Aglaonema, Rudbeckia, snake plant, Syngonium, sword fern, nandina, Aspidistra, and others.

In addition, hyacinth, tulip, freesia, calla lily, lycoris, and others can also have their offsets divided and planted at this time.

Using the Peace Lily as an example, Huahua's specific operation method is as follows:

1. A Peace Lily grown for two years is already very robust and has produced many plants, so that one pot can hardly hold them all. At this point, division can be used to solve the problem!

2. Turn it upside down. Take out the whole plant with roots and potting soil. If it is not easy to remove, water it a little first, then use your thumb to push outward through the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot, and the whole pot can be taken out with soil.

2. Separate the potting soil from the root system, and do not damage the roots, especially the fine roots.

3. Divide into as many plants as the number of pots needed, and try to choose a pot with both strong plants and young plants to improve the survival rate.

4. Put potting soil in the pot and plant the divided Peace Lilies into it. For the first few days, do not place them in direct sunlight; after the root system has recovered, let the flowers enjoy the sunlight.

Is the Peace Lily flower poisonous?

1. Is the Peace Lily flower poisonous?

The Peace Lily flower is a plant that can purify the air and is not poisonous. The Peace Lily flower is a variety of oleander, and the plant can grow to more than 2 meters at its longest. The leaves of the Peace Lily flower are oval, with very pointed tips and petioles, and are also glossy.

2. Peace Lily flower care methods——planting

Both division and cutting are suitable for planting Peace Lily flowers. The cutting time for Peace Lily flowers is suitable in all four seasons. For cuttings, choose relatively robust branches as cuttings. In winter, the cuttings can be longer, while in summer overly long branches are not suitable and are best kept at about eight to ten centimeters. In summer, water transpires quickly, so two leaves should be left on the cutting branch to help lock in moisture.

3. Peace Lily flower care methods——fertilizing

Peace Lily flowers like fertilizer. When cultivating Peace Lily flowers, add a certain amount of humus to increase fertility and nutrients, and at the same time fertilize the Peace Lily flower once every month.

4. Peace Lily flower care methods——light

Peace Lily flowers like light, and sufficient sunlight is very helpful for the growth of Peace Lily flowers, so when planting, give them more sun at appropriate times.
