Forsythia is a plant belonging to the genus Forsythia in the family Oleaceae, with very high ornamental value, and many people in China grow it. However, as more people grow it, questions about its propagation have also become a concern. How does Forsythia reproduce? What are the propagation methods for Forsythia? Let us walk you through it below.

1. How Forsythia reproduces: seed sowing / cuttings / layering / division

When it comes to how Forsythia reproduces, it mainly comes down to four methods: seed propagation, cutting propagation, division propagation, and layering propagation. Among these, seed sowing and cuttings are the more commonly used methods. Of course, as long as division and layering are done properly, they also achieve a very high survival rate. Below are the specific details of the four propagation methods, which interested readers can look into.

2. Propagation methods for Forsythia

1. Seed propagation

Before propagating Forsythia by seed, we first need to soak the seeds in warm water for one day. Once they begin to absorb water and swell, they can be taken out for sowing, which serves to stimulate the seeds. When sowing, we first scatter the seeds evenly over the soil surface, then cover them with 1cm of soil and water them. Be sure to water thoroughly, then place them in partial shade and wait for the seedlings to emerge.

2. Cutting propagation

Among the propagation methods for Forsythia, cutting propagation is one of the more commonly used. The best time to take cuttings is in spring, because the climate is more suitable and the survival rate will be higher. First, we select vigorously growing branches as cuttings, then insert them into the potting soil, and water thoroughly. Under normal care, the survival rate of cuttings is generally as high as 90%.

3. Layering propagation

Layering propagation of Forsythia is one of the simpler methods among its propagation techniques. We can generally choose to do it in spring. First, we bend a drooping branch of the plant down and bury it in the soil, then carry out normal care. The following spring, cut it away from the mother plant and replant it.

4. Division propagation

For division propagation of Forsythia, we can choose to do it before spring sprouting. We can dig out the young shoots growing beside a tree that is more than 3 years old, together with soil, and transplant them, or dig out the entire tree and divide it for transplanting. Generally, one plant can be divided into 3-5 plants. The key to this method is to ensure that each divided small plant retains a few fibrous roots, which results in a high survival rate and quick results.

3. Follow-up care

After everyone has successfully propagated the plant using the methods above, we can proceed with follow-up care. There are also many points to pay attention to when caring for Forsythia, such as watering and fertilizing, all of which require careful attention. If you do not know how to grow it, you can refer to the article on Forsythia cultivation methods, which contains detailed care instructions.

[Common questions]How does Forsythia reproduce?

[Expert answer]Forsythia is also known as Huanghua Tiao, Lianke, Huangqidan, etc. It has a wide range of uses and considerable economic value. Forsythia can be propagated by seeds, cuttings, layering, division, and other methods. In production, seed propagation is mainly used. A detailed explanation of the seed propagation method for Forsythia is given below:

1. Seed collection:Select superior mother plants. Choose superior individual plants that grow vigorously, have short and thick internodes, dense and plump flowers and fruits, no pests or diseases, and are of pure variety as mother trees. Pay attention to observing the flowering and fruiting periods, and grasp the appropriate seed collection time. Collection must be timely to avoid the seeds falling off on their own after maturity. Generally, mature fruits are collected from mid-to-late September to early October. Collect Forsythia fruits that are fully developed, with plump seeds, and large and heavy grains, then spread them thinly in a ventilated and cool place. After drying in the shade, thresh them. After careful selection and removal of impurities, choose neat, plump seeds free of pests and diseases, and store them for seed;

2. Seed storage:Storing Forsythia seeds under different conditions has an enormous impact on their germination rate, such as storage in a desiccator being high;

Image: Forsythia seeds

3. Sowing time:Forsythia seeds germinate easily; it should be said that the seeds are suitable for germinating at relatively high temperatures. Based on seed storage and germination conditions, combined with practical experience, cultivation time can be arranged in spring or winter. Spring sowing is in early-to-mid April, and winter sowing is done before the soil freezes;

4. Seed treatment:The seed coat of Forsythia seeds is relatively hard. Without pretreatment, direct sowing in the nursery field takes more than 1 month to germinate and emerge. Therefore, before sowing, germination-promoting treatment can be carried out. Newly introduced areas can use this method. The specific method is to select mature and plump seeds, soak them in warm water at about 30°C for about 4 hours, then remove them and mix them with 3 times their volume of wet sand, place them in a wooden box or small vat, cover the top with plastic film, and place them in a wind-sheltered, sunny spot. Turn them twice a day and keep them moist regularly. After more than 10 days, the seeds sprout and can be sown;

5. Sowing method:After sowing, seedlings emerge in 8—9 days, about 20 days earlier than seeds without pretreatment. If the soil is dry, first water the seedbed, and sow when the water has seeped down and the surface soil is slightly loose. Spring sowing is around “Qingming”, and winter sowing is before the soil freezes (seeds need no treatment and can emerge the next year). When sowing, on the prepared seedbed surface, open furrows 1 centimeter deep at a row spacing of 20-25 cm, mix the seeds with fine sand, evenly scatter them into the furrows, cover with soil and level it, and press lightly;

Image: Forsythia

6. Post-sowing management:Seedlings can emerge in 10-15 days, with a seeding rate of about 2-3 kg per mu. The soil cover must not be too thick, generally about 1 cm, and then cover with grass to maintain moisture. After the seeds emerge, remove the grass promptly. When the seedlings are 10 cm tall, thin them to a plant spacing of 10 cm. In early April of the second year, when the seedlings are about 30 cm tall, they can be transplanted to the field;

7. Direct sowing in the field:Open holes at a row spacing of 2 m and a plant spacing of 1.5 m, apply compost and plant ash, mix with soil, and begin sowing from late March to early April. You can also sow before the soil freezes in late autumn. Sow more than 10 seeds per hole, cover with soil after sowing, and press lightly. Note that sowing should be done when soil moisture is good.

[Editor's summary]Seed propagation is one of the most common propagation methods in Forsythia production, and nothing from seed collection to direct field sowing can be neglected. The above has introduced a detailed explanation of the seed propagation method for Forsythia, and we hope it will be helpful to everyone!

Forsythia profile
Forsythia Forsythia suspensa
Forsythia cultivation methods and precautions, an introduction to Forsythia

Forsythia is also known as Huanghua Tiao, Lianke, Qingqiao, Luoqiao, Huangqidan, etc., and its fruit is used as medicine. Forsythia is a traditional Chinese medicine for clearing heat and detoxifying, mainly treating the early stages of febrile disease, wind-heat common cold, fever, restlessness, sore throat, acute nephritis, etc. Forsythia blooms before the leaves in early spring, with a light and beautiful fragrance, golden branches all over, gorgeous and lovely. It is an excellent flowering shrub for early spring.
Forsythia is one of the traditional Chinese medicines commonly used in clinical practice in China. It is also known as Huanghua Tiao, Lianke, Qingqiao, Luoqiao, Huangqidan, etc. The Forsythia recorded in Part One of the 2005 edition of the Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China is the dried fruit of Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl, a plant of the genus Forsythia in the family Oleaceae. When the fruit is initially ripe and still green, it is harvested and called Qingqiao; when the fruit is fully ripe and yellow in color, it is harvested and called Laoqiao.
Forsythia has pharmacological effects such as antibacterial, cardiotonic, diuretic, and antiemetic effects. It is commonly used to treat acute wind-heat common cold, carbuncles and sores, lymphoid tuberculosis, urinary tract infections, and other conditions. It is the main raw material for traditional Chinese medicine preparations such as Shuanghuanglian Oral Liquid, Shuanghuanglian Powder for Injection, Qingre Jiedu Oral Liquid, Liancao Jiere Oral Liquid, and Yinqiao Jiedu Granules.
There are 11 major varieties worldwide, most originating from China, some from Korea and Japan, and only one from southern Europe. Its name forsythia was given in memory of the Scottish botanist William Forsyth.
Most of the Chinese varieties used as herbal medicine are the dried fruit of the Oleaceae plant Forsythia suspensa (Thunb.) Vahl. In mainland China, it is distributed in Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, Jiangxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, and other provinces and regions. When the fruit is initially ripe and still green in autumn, it is harvested, impurities are removed, and it is steamed and sun-dried, commonly called "Qingqiao"; when the fruit is fully ripe, it is harvested, sun-dried, and impurities are removed, commonly called "Laoqiao". It is the city flower of Seoul, the capital of South Korea.

Morphological characteristics of Forsythia
Deciduous shrub, up to 3 m tall; branches slender and spreading in an arching form, internodes hollow, nodes with a spot, lenticels numerous and prominent. Leaves simple or sometimes trifoliolate, opposite, leaf blades ovate or ovate-elliptic, 3-10 cm long, margins serrate. Flowers solitary or several born in leaf axils; calyx green, 4-lobed, lobes oblong; corolla yellow, 4-lobed, obovate-elliptic, stamens 2, stamens longer or shorter than pistil; opens before leaves in March-April.
The fruit of Forsythia is long ovoid or ovate, 1-2.5 cm long, 0.5-1.3 cm in diameter, surface yellow-brown, with longitudinal wrinkles and many raised small spots, with 1 obvious longitudinal groove on each side. Apex acute, base occasionally with a fruit stalk. Pericarp hard and brittle, fracture flat. Qingqiao fruit is complete, surface green-brown, mostly without wart-like protrusions, with many seeds inside, yellow-green, slender, with a wing on one side. Qingqiao is best when dry, black-green in color, and unbroken; Laoqiao is best when brown-yellow in color, with thick shell and glossy. Medicinal part: the fruit of the plant.

Ecological habits of Forsythia
Forsythia has strong sprouting ability. After coppicing, both the root stumps and trunk branches can sprout and reproduce, rapidly increasing the number of divisions and expanding the distribution range. The annual growth of Forsythia branches is not strong, and replacement is relatively fast. With increasing tree age, the growth of sprouting branches and the short branches produced on sprouting branches decreases year by year, and the short branches change from oblique growth to horizontal growth. According to surveys, in 8-12 year old plants, the annual short branches on 4-year sprouting branches are the most numerous, and then gradually decrease. The clump height and branch spread of Forsythia do not change much across different age stages. Forsythia branches are replaced quickly. After sprouting branches produce new branches, they gradually bend and slant outward. Therefore, although the plant continuously produces new short branches, the height is basically maintained at one level.
Light-loving, with a certain degree of shade tolerance; cold-resistant; tolerant of drought and barren soil, afraid of waterlogging; not selective about soil; strong resistance to pests and diseases.

Pest and disease control of Forsythia
The willow swift moth harms Forsythia. The larvae damage branches, boring the surface layer of the xylem into ring-shaped sunken tunnels, causing the affected branches to grow weakly and easily break in the wind. When damage is severe, the branches die. Adult body length 33-36 mm, wingspan 61-72 mm, body color varies greatly, mostly tea-brown; just after emergence green-brown, gradually becoming pink-brown, then tea-brown. The forewing costa has 7 semicircular markings, the center of the wing has 1 large dark brown slightly dark green triangular spot, and the outer margin has a broad transverse band composed of parallel blurred arc-shaped spots. Hindwing dark brown. The dorsal side of the hind femur of the male is densely covered with orange-yellow brush-like hairs. Egg spherical, diameter 0.6-0.7 mm, black. Larva body length 50-80 mm, head brown, body milky white, cylindrical, with yellow-brown tumor-like protrusions resembling hair plates. Pupa cylindrical, yellow-brown. [2] When snails are found in mid-March, they can be manually captured and killed, or touched and killed with lime powder. In mid-May, use ultraviolet lamps to trap and kill the adults of the stem borer. In early-to-mid June, manually wipe away the eggs laid by the stem borer. In early-to-mid July, if frass from the stem borer is found on the stems, use a cotton ball dipped in 50% phoxim or 40% dimethoate stock solution.
Efficacy and effects of Forsythia
Properties: bitter, slightly cold. Enters the lung, heart, and gallbladder meridians. Forsythia has broad-spectrum antibacterial effects, with strong inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella flexneri, and certain inhibitory effects on other pathogenic bacteria, influenza viruses, and fungi. It has anti-inflammatory effects. The oleanolic acid contained in this product has cardiotonic, diuretic, and blood pressure-lowering effects, and vitamin P can reduce vascular permeability and fragility and prevent hemolysis. The decoction has antiemetic effects and anti-liver injury effects. Clears heat and detoxifies, reduces swelling and dissipates nodules, and disperses wind-heat. Mainly treats carbuncles and sores, phlegm nodes and scrofula, externally contracted wind-heat, early warm disease, and painful heat strangury, etc.

It is a traditional Chinese medicine for clearing heat and detoxifying, mainly treating the early stages of febrile disease, wind-heat common cold, fever, restlessness, sore throat, acute nephritis, carbuncles and sores, and other symptoms. Its antibacterial effect is roughly similar to that of honeysuckle.
1. Landscaping: Forsythia blooms before the leaves in early spring, with a light and beautiful fragrance, golden branches all over, gorgeous and lovely. It is an excellent flowering shrub for early spring. It is suitable for placement beside houses, pavilion steps, wall corners, under hedges, and along roadsides, and is also suitable for planting by streams, ponds, rocks, and under rockeries. Because of its well-developed root system, it can be planted as a flower hedge or embankment-protecting tree.
2. Medicinal plant: stems, leaves, fruits, and roots can all be used as medicine.
3. Dietary nutrition: Forsythia seeds can be used to extract edible oil.
4. Beauty and skincare: The flowers and unripe fruits of Forsythia, after collection, are boiled in water for 20 minutes. Washing the face with this water every morning or before bed has good sterilizing, mite-killing, and skin-nourishing effects. With long-term continuous use, it can eliminate melasma and butterfly spots on the face and reduce acne and wrinkles.

Distribution area of Forsythia
Forsythia flowering period is March-May, fruiting period July-August. Forsythia is distributed in Shanxi, Henan, Shaanxi, Liaoning, Hebei, Gansu, Jiangsu, Shandong, Hubei, Jiangxi, Yunnan, and other places. It grows on wild mountain slopes; it is also cultivated. Forsythia is mainly produced in Shanxi, Henan, Shaanxi, and Shandong; Hubei, Sichuan, Gansu, and Hebei also produce it. Shanxi and Henan have the largest output. Huangqiao is sold nationwide and exported, while Qingqiao is mainly sold in Sichuan, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, and other places. It likes a sunny and humid environment; it is not strict about soil. In March-April, sow seeds in drills, opening furrows at a row spacing of 33 cm, about 4 cm deep, with a sowing width of about 10 cm, and cover with soil after sowing. When seedlings are 10 cm tall, thin them. Transplant and establish in the next spring or late autumn, with a row spacing of 2 m x 1.5 m and 1 plant per hole. Loosen the soil, weed, and fertilize every spring; after leaf fall in late autumn, prune mature trees to encourage new branch regeneration. You can also select 1-2 year old tender branches, cut them into cuttings about 33 cm long, and insert them in spring and summer at a row spacing of 33 cm x 17 cm. After 2 years of cultivation, transplant in spring.

[Pharmacological effects]:
Antibacterial effect: Forsythia concentrated decoction has antibacterial effects in vitro and can inhibit Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi, Escherichia coli, Shigella, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Vibrio cholerae, Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, etc.
The in vitro antibacterial effect of Forsythia is roughly similar to that of honeysuckle; it is the main antibacterial component in Yinqiao San.
Honeysuckle's inhibitory effect on Salmonella, especially Salmonella typhi and hemolytic Streptococcus, seems to exceed that of Forsythia, while the inhibition of Shigella and Staphylococcus aureus appears to be better with Forsythia.
When the two are used in combination, there is no synergistic effect in test tubes. In a compound formula with Coptis chinensis and Scutellaria baicalensis, the in vitro antibacterial effect is said to be stronger than when Forsythia is used alone.
There is not much research on the antibacterial active components in Forsythia. The inhibitory concentration of forsythol against Staphylococcus aureus in test tubes is 1:5120; against Shigella it is 1:1280; against Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Salmonella paratyphi (A) it is 1:640. It may be the antibacterial active component.
The flowers have a certain curative effect on experimental tuberculosis in mice, but are ineffective in guinea pigs.
In addition, its anti-tuberculosis bacillus effect in test tubes and clinically has also been reported.
The alcohol extract of Forsythia has an anti-Leptospira effect in vitro. Its strength is less than that of Coptis chinensis, honeysuckle, or Scutellaria baicalensis, and similar to that of Phellodendron amurense and Paris polyphylla.
Forsythia water infusion (1:5) has some inhibitory effect on Nocardia asteroides in test tubes.
The ethanol and acetone extracts of Korean Forsythia fruit, as well as the resin extracted from F. intermedia, have antifungal effects.
② Other effects: Forsythia can inhibit the emetic effect of digitalis injected intravenously in pigeons, reducing the number of vomiting episodes, but does not change the latency of vomiting. Its antiemetic effect is similar to the effect 2 hours after injection of chlorpromazine.
It can also inhibit vomiting caused by subcutaneous injection of apomorphine in dogs, so it is speculated that its antiemetic principle may be inhibition of the chemoreceptor trigger zone in the medulla oblongata.
The pericarp of Forsythia contains oleanolic acid (also known as oleanolic acid), so it has cardiotonic and diuretic effects.
Forsythia has a very broad antibacterial spectrum and obvious anti-inflammatory effects. It can promote the formation of an inflammatory barrier, reduce capillary permeability, reduce inflammatory exudation, and eliminate local redness and swelling caused by acne. It has a certain inhibitory effect on sebaceous gland secretion, reduces excessive skin oiliness, and has the effect of improving skin quality for oily skin. Forsythia can protect normal skin and reduce the occurrence of acne and folliculitis. [8]

It contains forsythol, coumarin, oleanolic acid, saponins, vitamin P, etc. It has effects such as clearing heat, resolving toxin, dissipating masses and discharging pus. It mainly treats warm heat, sores and ulcers, scrofula, erysipelas, macules and rashes, and influenza; use the fruit 10-15 grams decocted in water, or add it to formulas. It is often used for wind-heat common cold. [9]

Cultivation Techniques of Lianqiao (Forsythia)
Can be propagated by cuttings, sowing and division. Cuttings are taken from February to March. For sowing, after collecting seeds in October in autumn, stratify them with moist sand and sow in rows from February to March of the following year. Seedlings are transplanted during the deciduous period, choosing a sunny, well-drained and fertile soil for planting; after flowering each year, prune out dead branches, weak branches and leaves, and overly dense or old branches, while paying attention to fertilizing around the roots. Not fertilizing is not too much of a problem, because if there is too much fertilizer, many flowers will only grow leaves and not flowers, and this plant is very tenacious and can grow in almost any quality of soil.
Cultivation Techniques
1. Site Selection and Land Preparation
Choose a sunny plot with fertile, loose-textured, well-drained sandy loam soil, plow in autumn to a depth of 20-25 cm, apply base fertilizer together with land preparation at 2000-2500 kg of barnyard manure per mu, then rake fine and level. For direct seeding, use a plant-to-row spacing of 130 cm x 200 cm, with holes 30-40 cm deep and 30-40 cm in diameter; for seedling beds, make flat beds 1 meter wide, with length depending on the terrain.
2. Propagation Methods
Mainly seed propagation and cutting propagation, and layering and division can also be used.
1. Seed Propagation
For direct seeding, in the south in early to mid-March, and in the north in early April, dig a small hole about 3 cm deep in the prepared holes, select mature, plump, disease-free seeds, sow 5-10 seeds per hole, cover with soil and press lightly so that the seeds are in close contact with the soil. Generally flowers and fruits after 3-4 years.
Seedling raising and transplanting: On a leveled and finely raked seedling bed, open furrows 1 cm deep at a row spacing of 20 cm, mix the seeds with fine sand and evenly sow them into the furrows, cover with soil and press lightly, using 2 kg of seeds per mu. For spring sowing, seedlings emerge in about half a month; when the seedlings are 5 cm tall, thin them to a fixed spacing; when 10 cm tall, loosen the soil and weed; apply 10 kg of urea per mu, applied with irrigation water, to promote seedling growth. Transplant in autumn of the same year or before bud break in spring of the following year. Use a plant-to-row spacing of 120 cm x 150 cm, hole diameter 30 cm, apply 5 kg of mixed fertilizer, mix well with soil, plant 2-3 seedlings, fill soil to half the hole, lift the seedlings slightly to spread the roots, then fill with soil to the top and firm it. If the soil is dry, water after transplanting, and after the water seeps down, cultivate soil to preserve moisture.
2. Cutting Propagation
On cloudy and rainy days in summer, cut the middle and upper parts of 1-2-year-old tender branches into 30 cm long cuttings, open furrows 20 cm deep on the seedling bed at a plant-to-row spacing of 5 cm x 30 cm, place them obliquely in the furrows, then cover with soil and press firmly, keep the bed moist; they can take root and survive in the same year, and are transplanted before bud break in spring of the following year.
3. Field Management During the seedling stage of seed propagation, when the seedlings are 20 cm tall, weed, loosen the soil and thin the seedlings. When thinning, leave 2 plants per hole and water timely. When the seedlings are 30-40 cm tall, apply diluted manure and urine once to promote growth. When the main trunk is 70-80 cm tall, cut off the top shoot to encourage more side branches and cultivate main branches. Thereafter, select and retain 3-4 strong branches on the main branches to cultivate as secondary main branches, and release side branches; through shaping and pruning, form a natural open-center tree shape with a low trunk and dwarf crown, hollow inside and rounded outside, ventilated and light-transmitting, with sparse small branches and early fruiting. At any time, prune out slender weak branches, water sprouts, and diseased and insect-damaged branches. During the fruiting period, apply farmyard manure and phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to promote early fruit set and ripening.
