Miniature Rose Growing Methods and Precautions for Growing Miniature Roses

Miniature roses are small potted plants with beautiful flowers and are highly ornamental, so many flower enthusiasts grow them indoors. So, how do you grow miniature roses? What should you pay attention to when growing them? Below, we introduce the growing methods and precautions for miniature roses.

Growing Methods for Miniature Roses

1. Watering:

Miniature roses have small plants and shallow roots. Before spring budding, the potting soil should be kept moist; do not water if the soil is not dry, and gradually increase the amount of watering after budding. Generally, water once before 10 a.m. each day, and water an appropriate amount in the afternoon depending on whether the potting soil is dry or moist. In summer, water once in the morning and once in the evening, and generally do not water at night.

2. Fertilizing:

Miniature roses like fertilizer. During the vigorous growth periods in spring and autumn, apply fertilizer once every 10-15 days; either organic fertilizer or compound fertilizer is fine. Stop fertilizing during the high-temperature season in summer and the low-temperature period in winter.

3. Care location:

It should be placed in a spot with ample light and good air circulation, and appropriately shaded during the intense heat of midsummer. Miniature roses are relatively cold-tolerant and can be placed outdoors in winter.

4. Pruning:

After the flowers fade, part of the branches should be cut off, leaving 2-3 nodes on the new branches before cutting. Branches with more than 2 nodes that are cut off can be used for cuttings propagation. Pruning at the onset of winter is mainly for shaping: first cut off dead branches, diseased and pest-infested branches, and crossing thin weak branches. For plants with robust growth and a well-balanced shape, cut off 1/3 of the whole plant. For weak-growing plants, cut off about 2/3 of the whole plant, leaving 3-4 strong main branches.

5. Repotting:

Repot once every 1-2 years, remove about 2/3 of the old soil, and replace it with loose, fertile soil rich in organic matter. This is mostly done before spring budding. Along with repotting, cut off dead roots, rotten roots, and diseased and pest-damaged roots, shorten overly long roots, thin out overly dense roots and some old roots, and encourage new roots to sprout so the plant grows vigorously.

6. Pest and disease control:

(1) Disease control. The main diseases of miniature roses are powdery mildew, gray mold, and black spot. The main control methods are scientific cultivation, enhancing the plant's disease resistance, promptly removing dead branches and fallen leaves, spraying 5 degrees Baume lime sulfur mixture before budding, and after budding spraying 70% thiophanate-methyl 800 times solution once every half month, for 3-4 consecutive sprayings.

(2) Pest control. Common pests of miniature roses include aphids, red spiders, and leafcutter bees. You can promptly use 40% dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate 1000 times solution or 45% malathion 800 times solution for spraying and killing.

Precautions for Growing Miniature Roses

1. Pot and medium selection. Because miniature roses are short with shallow roots, when planting it is best to choose a clay pot with a diameter of 18-20 cm. For the growing medium, choose soil rich in organic matter, loose and fertile, with good permeability. If heavy clay soil or calcareous soil is used, in mild cases growth will be poor, and in severe cases the whole plant will die.

2. Moderate water and fertilizer management. Because miniature roses have small branches and leaves, they need less water, and during the growing season watering should keep the potting soil moist most of the time. Too little watering leads to poor growth; too much watering easily causes root rot. They like fertilizer, and if you want them to bloom frequently, you must continuously replenish nutrients. When fertilizing, grasp the principle of applying thin fertilizer frequently; during the growing period, generally apply once every half month a diluted, fully decomposed cake fertilizer solution. If you spray 1-2 times a 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution during the bud stage, the flower color will be even more brilliant. In midsummer, the plant is in a semi-dormant state, so fertilizing should be paused.

3. Frequent pruning. To make it produce more flowers year-round, you need to continuously cut off old branches to encourage new branches to sprout. In early spring, carry out moderate pruning together with repotting (generally repot once every 1-2 years). Generally keep only 3-4 main branches, keep 3-5 cm from the base on each main branch, and cut off the upper branches; this can sprout more new strong branches, forming a full plant shape with lush branches and leaves that keeps blooming. After the flowers fade, promptly cut off the remaining flower stems to reduce nutrient consumption and help promote new branches.

4. Miniature roses are sun-loving flowering plants and grow robustly with many brightly colored flowers under full-sun conditions. Therefore, when growing them in pots, except for placing them indoors for a few days to enjoy the flowers each time they bloom, during the growing period they all need to be placed on a south-facing balcony or in a sunny spot in the courtyard so they receive ample light. In the hot summer in the north, sunlight is intense, and appropriate shading around midday will make them grow better. Like potted roses, after winter begins they need to be moved indoors to overwinter.

Growing Methods for Miniature Roses

Soil

Miniature roses like to grow in sandy soil that is fertile and has good water retention. If the soil drainage is poor and the soil is compacted, it is very unfavorable for their growth and can even cause them to die. Soil with a lot of calcareous matter can also affect the rose's absorption and use of certain trace elements, leading to chlorosis.

Light

Miniature roses like light, and appropriate sunlight during the day is beneficial to their growth. But in the hot summer, if there is too much direct strong light, it is also unfavorable for flower bud development, and the petals are prone to scorching. So we must remember to avoid direct sunlight.

Fertilizing

Miniature roses have a long flowering period and basically bloom all year round. They have a relatively large demand for nutrients, so they also like fertilizer. We need to continuously fertilize them every month to ensure sufficient nutritional conditions.

Temperature

The suitable temperature for miniature rose growth is 15 to 26 degrees. In summer, avoid excessive heat; when the temperature exceeds 33 degrees, appropriate shading is needed. If you want better care in summer, you must maintain good ventilation. The ground can be sprayed with water to lower the temperature, but avoid spraying it onto the leaves.
