Want to increase garlic yield in spring? Watering and fertilizing are key

Water well, fertilize well - the key elements for increasing spring garlic yield

Around the time of Awakening of Insects, as temperatures rise, garlic enters the "turning green period." Around the Spring Equinox, garlic reaches the rotting mother period (also called the mother-returning period). At this time, garlic's demand for fertilizer and water increases accordingly, so if you want to increase spring garlic yield, you must apply sufficient fertilizer and water to the garlic. The editor has summarized some key elements as follows:

Garlic

    1. Water the turning-green water well, apply the turning-green fertilizer well.By the Spring Equinox season, the garlic sprouts begin to turn green and gradually grow. Since early spring soil temperatures are low, it is best to set the time for watering the turning-green water at noon, to achieve the goal of promoting early sprouting of garlic seedlings. Along with watering, apply 15-25 kg of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer per mu, or apply 15 kg of potassium sulfate as a top dressing. Afterward, control water appropriately to promote garlic root development and the differentiation of garlic scapes and bulbs.

    2. Water the scape-promoting water sufficiently, apply the scape-promoting fertilizer heavily.During this period, the garlic's bulbils and flower buds differentiate rapidly and gradually enter the stage of simultaneous growth of garlic scapes and bulbs. The garlic's leaf area reaches its maximum, and the garlic scapes grow rapidly. The fertilizer and water management during this period directly affects the yield of garlic scapes and bulbs, so more water is needed. Watering must be done in time to meet the garlic's growth needs. Along with watering, apply 25 kg of compound fertilizer per mu. After 15 days, apply another 25 kg of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer per mu, or 15 kg each of urea and nitric phosphorus potassium compound fertilizer. Generally, water once every 7-10 days. During the garlic scape-extraction period, water once every 5-7 days. After every two waterings, apply a quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, and when spraying foliar fertilizer, add some sulfur as a supplement, as garlic's demand for sulfur is also relatively high at this time.

    3. Water the bulb-expanding water sufficiently, apply the bulb-expanding fertilizer skillfully. After harvesting the scapes is the peak period of garlic bulb expansion. Be careful when harvesting scapes to prevent damage to the garlic leaves and roots. At this time, bulb expansion and weight gain are the key. After harvesting the scapes, to prevent early aging of garlic leaves, water the garlic in time to extend the green time of the garlic leaves and promote the transfer of nutrients to the bulbs, increasing material accumulation. Therefore, during this period, quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer is the main focus, with phosphorus and potassium as supplements, applying 15-20 kg of urea or potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per mu. To meet the garlic's water needs in the later stage, keep the soil moist. Stop watering about one week before garlic harvest.
