Eggplants need plenty of fertilizer, but it must be applied properly; key points for applying nitrogen fertilizer to eggplants in high temperatures

Eggplants have a high demand for nitrogen fertilizer, but during the high-temperature season, when applying nitrogen fertilizer, the amount should be moderate and the method appropriate; at the same time, it should be combined with other fertilizers to achieve the proper effect.

Topdressing eggplants

    1. The amount should not be too large. Because in the high-temperature season, after urea is applied to the soil, its conversion rate is fast, and after the eggplants' needs are met, the excess portion will be lost. This is especially true in sandy soil, where the loss proportion is even greater. For this reason, the urea application rate per mu of eggplants each time should be controlled within 30 kg, and the ammonium bicarbonate application rate each time per mu should not exceed 40 kg. If the application rate is too large, besides nutrient loss, the eggplant leaves and fruits will also suffer ammonia damage, so it should not be too large.

    2. It should be applied deeply. Vegetable growers are accustomed to applying chemical fertilizers by flushing them with water, but this method is not suitable in summer, because when the temperature is relatively high, a large amount of ammonia gas volatilizes during flushing application of chemical fertilizers, reducing fertilizer efficiency. This is especially true for ammonium bicarbonate, which can easily cause ammonia poisoning in eggplants. For this reason, furrow application or hole application can be used, and after topdressing, the soil covering thickness should be greater than 5 cm to reduce fertilizer volatilization.

    3. Balanced fertilization. Eggplants have a high demand for nitrogen fertilizer, but phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are also indispensable. Therefore, balanced fertilization should be achieved. When topdressing, nitrogen chemical fertilizer alone should not be applied. During the full fruit stage, it is best to apply ternary compound fertilizer 2 times, with a total of no less than 40 kg per mu of eggplants for the two applications, so as to meet the needs of eggplant growth and fruiting.
