Can String of Pearls be grown hydroponically? Hydroponic methods and precautions
Generally speaking, hydroponics is not recommended for String of Pearls; growing it in soil is the better method. In soil it can grow healthily. When growing String of Pearls in soil, you only need to place it on the soil, then gently cover it with a thin layer of soil and water it appropriately, and it will take root and sprout; it roots quite quickly in soil and is very easy to keep alive.
Now that we know the best way to grow String of Pearls is in soil, how can we make it grow more robustly during cultivation? Next, the editor will share a few little tips with everyone!
Introduction to hydroponic String of Pearls
Last time we introduced some basic facts about String of Pearls, and many friends felt that growing it in soil is too difficult and wondered whether it could be grown hydroponically. To meet everyone's needs, Tutu looked up a lot of information online and also experimented personally for a long time, and finally found the answer. Now it is shared with you all; friends who want to grow String of Pearls hydroponically, hurry up and follow along with Tutu. String of Pearls cannot be grown hydroponically. Why is that?
Spider plants that can be grown hydroponically are generally hydroponic spider plants; String of Pearls is mainly grown in soil. Because it likes warm, humid and semi-shaded environments, one very unique characteristic of String of Pearls is that it is fairly drought-tolerant and cold-tolerant. It also likes soil rich in organic matter that is loose and fertile. Therefore, the methods for growing String of Pearls include the following points:
1. Because the leaves are fleshy and juicy, it is drought-tolerant. When watering during cultivation, it is better to keep it dry than wet; this is one of the keys to success. When the weather is dry, you can spray more water on the leaves and vines to make up for the lack of moisture and keep the beads green and plump. It rather likes semi-shade; exposure to strong sun may scorch the beads, while too weak light will result in poor growth.
2. The plant's root system is very shallow, so it can be planted in a shallow pot. Generally, use a tile to cover the bottom hole and spread a layer of coal cinder or coarse sand to increase aeration and drainage (especially when using the commonly available plastic pots). For the soil, it is best to use leaf mold (fallen leaves of trees in autumn and winter mixed with a certain amount of broken soil exposed to the sun for a year can be used; mix in a certain amount of sand (soil-to-sand ratio of about 1:3).
3. It likes warmth and humidity, is fairly cold-tolerant (in the Jianghuai region it can tolerate low temperatures of 0°C during cultivation), and is heat-tolerant; the optimum temperature is about 20°C~28°C. Growth is slow at both high and low temperatures, and in high-temperature environments above 30°C it almost goes dormant, so watering and fertilizing should be reduced, otherwise the roots rot easily -- this is also one of the keys to successful cultivation.
4. In spring and autumn, when growth is vigorous, apply "light fertilizer frequently"; spraying 1-3‰ nitrogen fertilizer and monopotassium phosphate on the leaf surface often helps make the beads greener and plumper and increases ornamental value.
5. There are few pests and diseases; aphids in spring are one of them, so remove them promptly or spray 1500 times diluted omethoate to kill them; mites in summer and autumn are another, which need to be killed with 1000 times diluted dicofol. Pay attention to ventilation and increasing leaf-surface humidity to reduce mite infestation.
6. String of Pearls can be propagated by cuttings. The vines very easily produce aerial roots; in spring and autumn cut a few segments and bury half of them in sand or loose soil, keeping it moist but not waterlogged, and they will root quickly for planting (about half a month in spring and autumn, while rooting is difficult in winter and summer; when a potted plant is not uniform and full enough but has grown too long, this measure can be used to compensate.)
I wonder whether everyone has understood the cultivation tips above? String of Pearls is a succulent plant; if grown hydroponically it easily spoils or rots at the roots, so everyone should not casually try growing String of Pearls or other succulents hydroponically. Although Tutu cannot tell you how to grow this cute little thing hydroponically, it can introduce many techniques for growing String of Pearls in soil. So friends who did not get the hydroponic answer they wanted, do not be discouraged; String of Pearls grown in soil is also very beautiful.
Can the succulent String of Pearls be grown hydroponically?
String of Pearls is a succulent plant of the genus Senecio in the Asteraceae family. Because it is made up of strings of plump, full, emerald-green oval leaflets, it is also called Jade Beads, Lover's Tears, Buddha Beads, Green Bell, and Green Bells. Its flowering period is generally from December of the current year to January of the following year. Many flower lovers who grow String of Pearls want to grow it hydroponically, but in fact it cannot be grown in water. String of Pearls likes warm, humid, semi-shaded environments. It has strong adaptability and is fairly drought-tolerant and cold-tolerant. It likes soil rich in organic matter that is loose and fertile. It grows best in a warm environment with relatively high air humidity and strong diffused light. It is not picky about soil and grows better in loose sandy loam. It is generally suitable for growing under medium light conditions and also tolerates weak light. The optimum growth temperature is 15-25°C, and the overwintering temperature is 5°C. In addition, when growing String of Pearls, pay attention to watering; in hot summer weather, shade it appropriately, move the plant to a semi-shaded environment, cut off dead leaves, and frequently spray water on the leaf surface and the surroundings, so that newly sprouted leaves can return to a normal state. When watering, do not let water accumulate in the pot soil, avoid prolonged rain, and also repot String of Pearls frequently.
