Pot-Grown Carnation Growing Methods

  1. Carnations like a well-ventilated, sunny environment with dry air, but dislike high temperature and high humidity; the most suitable growing temperature is 19-21°C. The cultivation soil should retain fertilizer, drain well, be airy, and rich in humus.

  2. For potted carnations, choose a tall pot with a relatively large inner diameter, and first apply enough base fertilizer containing potassium, calcium, nitrogen, and phosphorus at the bottom of the pot. After transplanting, water once a day on sunny days to keep the potting soil moist. Carnations are neither drought-tolerant nor tolerant of waterlogging.

  3. During the carnation's growing period, alternately apply diluted urea water, ash from burned wheat straw, or sauce-residue fertilizer once every half month. Note: carnations should not be given concentrated fertilizer.

  4. Carnations need 6-8 hours of light every day. In midsummer, carnations enter a semi-dormant state; at this time, avoid exposure to the scorching sun. The potting soil must not accumulate water, otherwise it easily causes root rot in carnations. To encourage branching, pinch off the top when the plant is 15-20 cm tall.

  5. Generally keep 6-7 lower side buds, then pinch the growing tips once more, finally giving the plant 12-14 side branches. When buds form, keep only one bud at the top of each branch, and remove all lower axillary side buds and side shoots. The second pinching must be done before mid-August.

  6. After the above treatment, carnations can be made graceful in shape with abundant, vividly colored flowers. Generally after transplanting, if water and fertilizer are suitable, the temperature is appropriate, and light is sufficient, they can bloom within 3 months.
