To manage the spawn-running stage of Pleurotus pulmonarius cultivation, you can refer to the following methods:
Spawn running should be carried out in a cool, ventilated, and hygienic site, avoiding direct sunlight and keeping it away from rooms housing chickens and ducks; the spawn-running site should also be disinfected harmlessly beforehand. The key points during the spawn-running stage are controlling temperature and ventilating at the right times.
After inoculation, the fungus bags should be stacked promptly: bag bottoms facing bag bottoms, with the two ends facing outward respectively, laid flat in a single row; the height should be kept within 1.2 m, and a 0.5 m aisle should be left between stacks. The direction of the stacks should match the direction of the doors and windows. This spawn-running method is generally used at the same site as fruiting, fruiting in place, which helps improve site utilization and labor efficiency. If conditions permit, the fungus bags can be stood upright on a flat surface, which gives even better spawn-running results. Never stack them into large piles during seasons with higher temperatures.
During spawn running, check the temperature and spawn-running progress frequently, and ventilate at the same time. When the temperature is too high, avoid ventilating at noon; ventilate in the early morning, at dusk, and at night instead, for about 0.5 hours each time. Turn the stacks promptly during spawn running, at least 2 times in total. The first turning should be done when the mycelium has covered the surface and grown downward about 2 cm; when turning, swap the positions of the fungus bags up, down, left, and right to promote even spawn running, and at the same time adjust the size of the stacks to lower the indoor temperature. When turning, also check for contamination by competitor microbes; handle severely contaminated bags promptly, and place lightly contaminated ones separately for separate handling. As long as management is proper and the temperature suitable, the mycelium can fill the bags 40-45 days after inoculation.
