Corn is vulnerable to pests from emergence to maturity, and to achieve high quality and high yield of corn, proper pest control is very important. Especially for the damage caused by corn borers, one must not be careless.
Corn borer, also called stalk borer, is a pest that occurs relatively commonly and causes relatively serious damage on corn. Young larvae bore into the whorl to cause damage, and after the leaves unfold, many small holes in horizontal rows are left behind; older larvae bite and feed on silks, stalks, and the base of the tassel, and can also bore into the cob axis and move in and out at will to bite and feed on corn kernels.

Control of corn borers can be carried out by referring to the following two periods:
1. Control at the whorl stage
At this time the insects are small and sensitive to chemicals, making this the best timing for control. You can use 3% carbofuran granules or 1% 1605 emulsifiable concentrate granules (made by diluting 0.50 kg of 50% ethyl 1605 emulsifiable concentrate with 10 kg of water and then mixing with 25 kg of coal cinder or fine sand) and apply them into the whorl for control; use about 1 gram of pesticide per plant, and about 2 kg of pesticide per mu; according to experience from previous years, mixing methamidophos and cypermethrin at a ratio of 5-9:1, diluting 1000 times, and pouring the solution into the whorl gives good results.

2. Control at the ear stage
At this time corn is tasseling and silking, and older corn borer larvae are active on the plants biting and feeding on silks and stalks. You can use 50% dichlorvos 500-times solution or 90% trichlorfon 800-times solution to spray the silks and ears, or after pollination is finished, prepare a pesticide paste and smear it on the silk area, or cut off the top 2 cm of the ear, all of which can achieve the effect of controlling corn borers.
