The China “Longevity Cup” Bonsai Masterpiece Competition was hosted by the China Bonsai Artists Association and organized by the Jiangsu Provincial Flower and Tree Association and the Rugao Municipal People's Government. More than 200 bonsai enthusiasts from 17 regions including Beijing, Shanghai, Shandong, Guangdong, Guangxi, Anhui, Shanxi, Ningxia and Jiangsu took part in the competition with their own works; nearly 400 bonsai, more than 50 viewing stones, more than 40 root carvings and gourd carvings were entered. The country's 7 schools - Lingnan, Shanghai, Sichuan, Hui, Yang, Su and Tongru - gathered in Rugao to display their styles in an unprecedented grand occasion. Among the root artworks were prized pieces that had won major awards, and the flowers and trees and bonsai were even more exquisitely shaped: some bonsai had luxuriant branches and layers of cloud-like pads, while others were gnarled and ancient with an iron-hard frame; the root carvings and viewing stones were lifelike and vivid, with superb carving skills, leaving viewers relaxed and delighted, lingering without wanting to leave.

After careful scoring by expert judges and supervisors, a total of 3 special prizes, 17 first prizes, 29 second prizes and 69 third prizes were awarded in the plant bonsai and water-and-stone bonsai categories. In the viewing stone and root art categories, 4 first prizes, 8 second prizes and 18 third prizes were awarded.
