After harvesting oyster mushrooms, too low a water content in the growing substrate is the main reason for low yields. The following three methods can be used to keep the substrate at a suitable moisture level.
Wall-style casing soil moisture retention method for mushroom logs: In a greenhouse, use the length of the mushroom bags as the width and make a soil ridge 15-20 cm high. After the bags have been fully colonized and are about to fruit, remove the bags and arrange the colonized logs neatly on the soil ridge. After each layer is arranged, cover it with 3-4 cm of soil. Spray water on both ends of the logs and smooth them with mud, then arrange a second layer of logs on top and cover with soil, repeating this until 6-9 layers are arranged. After the mushroom wall is arranged, spray heavily once so the casing soil absorbs enough water. Using this method for moisture retention can increase oyster mushroom yields by 50%-90%.
Bag-mouth nutritional soil casing moisture retention method: Mix 45 kg of fertile soil, 5 kg of plant ash and an appropriate amount of water evenly to make nutritional soil. The amount of water added should be such that when squeezed into a ball by hand and released from a height of 1 m, it falls apart on landing. Bagging, cultivation and management are the same as conventional methods; simply put 2-3 cm of nutritional soil into each end of the mushroom bag. During the fruiting period, spray water on the nutritional soil 1-2 times per day. Using this method for moisture retention can increase oyster mushroom yields by 50%.
Sunken bed casing soil moisture retention method: After the first flush of oyster mushrooms is harvested from bag cultivation, remove the bags and sun-dry for 1-2 days so that a skin forms on the surface of the logs to inhibit excessive formation of fruiting bodies. Use a sterilized knife to cut the logs lengthwise, arrange the logs with the cut surface facing up on the sunken bed, fill the spaces between the logs with fine sand, and then cover with 2-3 cm of fine soil. Mix superphosphate, monopotassium phosphate and white sugar in a ratio of 2:0.2:1, dilute with water 100 times and spray on the logs. Using this method for moisture retention can increase oyster mushroom yields by 80%.
