When ginger grows to about 20 cm, the first generation of stem borers begins to cause damage. The newly hatched larvae first damage the tender leaves, and by the 3rd instar they begin to bore into the stems, mostly entering at the 2nd to 3rd nodes, often causing the central leaves to wilt or the whole plant to die. The second generation of stem borers mostly bores into the stems from the middle and upper parts, with the largest number of insects in the middle part. At present, most of the borers in ginger fields are eggs and 1st to 2nd instar larvae, and have not yet entered the stems to cause damage. The stem borer prefers moderate temperatures and high humidity; high temperatures and dry conditions are unfavorable for its occurrence. Especially when the ginger plants grow to 50 cm, the closed and highly humid environment of the ginger field leads to severe pest outbreaks, so the control of the stem borer should be carried out early.
For the control of the stem borer, prevention can be carried out by planting trap crops around the ginger field. The stem borer has a mixed diet; besides damaging ginger, it also damages crops such as corn and sorghum. Based on this characteristic, trap crops can be planted around the ginger field purposefully. After the adults lay eggs, chemical control can be carried out or the plants can be pulled up and composted. At the same time, pay attention to the planting density of the ginger field, promptly remove old leaves and rotten leaves in the field, and reduce field humidity. Chemical control should be carried out in time. Before the borers enter the stems, spray the plants with pesticides. Beta-cypermethrin, emamectin benzoate, and phoxim can be used for foliar spraying to prevent the stem borer from entering the stems and causing damage, which would increase the difficulty of control.
