Corn aphids, commonly known as "greasy bugs" or "honey bugs", harm not only corn but also crops such as sorghum and barley. They pierce and suck plant sap. Aphid numbers are very low at the seedling stage, but surge during the ear stage, secreting large amounts of "honeydew", which forms a black mold-like layer on the leaves, affecting photosynthesis and reducing the 1000-grain weight. The control methods are as follows:

(1) Chemical control: use 5% phorate granules at 200 g per 667 sq m, mixed with 1.5 kg of fine sand or soil, applying the pesticide to every other ridge, and fumigating to kill the aphids; spray 0.5% dimethoate powder at 1.5-2.0 kg per 667 sq m, or 50% dimethoate emulsifiable concentrate at 1500 times dilution, or 50% pirimicarb powder at 8 g per 667 sq m, diluted with 50 kg of water for spraying.

(2) Protect and utilize natural enemies: small black spiders and many ladybugs all feed on aphids. When these beneficial insects are seen, do not spray pesticides, or use pesticides that do not harm these natural enemies, such as 50% pirimicarb.
