How do you select spawn when cultivating wood ear mushrooms?
How do you choose wood ear mushroom spawn? Here are the methods. When selecting wood ear mushroom spawn, you can identify whether the spawn is good or bad by the following methods: 1. Check the appearance: check whether the bottle label matches the wood ear mushroom spawn to avoid buying the wrong one. The culture time should be within two months; counting from the inoculation date, the spawn age should preferably be 30-40 days, and at the same time check whether the bottle stopper wall is cracked or the cotton plug has fallen out.

2. Check the mycelium:
Spawn with pure white mycelium, and thick, short, dense and neat hyphae is high-quality spawn. If there are green, yellow, red, blue or gray hyphae, it is spawn infected with contaminating microorganisms and must be discarded.
3. Check the ear primordia:
If there is no light black ear primordium between the bottle wall and the substrate, it is excellent spawn; a small amount of ear primordium means normal spawn; if there is too much, then it has been subcultured too many times, and although after inoculation the mushrooms emerge early and in large numbers, they do not grow large and the yield is relatively low. Pay attention to sediment: if there is no or only light brown gelatinous material on the bottle wall, it is qualified spawn; if there is a yellow-brown liquid, it is aged spawn and must not be purchased.
4. Check the spawn block:
Sawdust spawn has mycelium growing all over its surface, so the sawdust is no longer visible; when dug out, it is best if it comes out in a block and does not crumble. Pay attention to the smell: pull out the cotton plug, and if you smell the fresh fragrance of spawn, it is qualified; if there is an off odor such as sour wine or mustiness, then it is spoiled spawn and cannot be used.
Precautions for wood ear mushroom spawn:
If the spawn culture time is too short or the temperature is too low, and the mycelium has not covered the whole bottle or has not grown into the interior of the sawdust, it should continue to be cultivated at a suitable temperature and then used for inoculation; it should be stored indoors in a clean, dry place with relatively low light. Before inoculation, it is strictly forbidden to pull out the cotton plug; spawn that has already been opened for inoculation should not be left overnight, to prevent contamination by contaminating microorganisms.
