Plant growth regulators play important roles in regulating the growth of ornamental plants, preventing excessive leggy growth, promoting rooting, cultivating strong seedlings, controlling sex differentiation, preventing flower and fruit drop, enhancing resistance, and preserving freshness during storage. However, the methods of using different plant growth regulators vary depending on the type of agent, the target plant, the purpose of use, the plant's growth conditions, and climatic conditions, so reasonable selection should be made in practice.
Seed dressing method The seed dressing method and seed coating method are mainly used for seed treatment. When treating seeds with fungicides, insecticides, microelement fertilizers, etc., plant growth regulators can be added as appropriate. The seed dressing method involves mixing the agent with seeds thoroughly so that the seed surface is coated with the agent. For example, the agent can be sprayed onto the seeds with a sprayer, stirred evenly, and then sown.

Seed coating method The seed coating method uses a dedicated seed coating formulation, which is wrapped around the outside of the seed to form a film of a certain thickness. In addition to promoting seed germination, it can also achieve the purposes of preventing and controlling pests and diseases, increasing mineral nutrients, and regulating plant growth.

Soaking method This method is commonly used to promote rooting of cuttings, seed treatment, and preservation during storage. For example, leafy woody cuttings are placed in 5 to 10 ml/L indolebutyric acid, soaked for 12 to 24 hours, and then inserted directly into the seedbed. A quick-dip method can also be used: mix naphthaleneacetic acid and talcum powder at a ratio of 1 gram to 1000 grams, moisten the lower part of the cuttings with clean water, then dip them in a small amount of the powder and insert them into the seedbed.

Spraying method Prepare a solution of the appropriate concentration as needed and spray it onto the plants. The droplets should be fine and uniform, and the sprayed area should be moistened. To help the agent adhere to the plant surface, a small amount of emulsifier, such as laundry detergent or surfactant, and other adjuvants can be added to the solution to increase its adhesion. When spraying, try to spray as much as possible on the branches and leaves in the middle and upper parts of the plant.

Irrigation method Prepare the plant growth regulator as an aqueous solution and pour it directly into the soil or apply it mixed with fertilizer so that the roots can fully absorb it. For potted flowers, the amount of solution needed depends on the size of the plant and the pot; generally, a pot with a diameter of 9 to 12 cm requires 200 to 300 ml. To promote flowering and control the elongation growth of stems and branches, a 0.1% to 0.3% aqueous solution of aminosuccinic acid and chlormequat can be used for irrigation.

Smearing method When treating with lanolin, apply the agent-containing lanolin directly to the treatment site, mostly on wounds, which helps promote rooting; it can also be applied to buds. The incision smearing method for air layering can be used for propagating precious, difficult-to-root flowers. The method is to make a girdle on the branch to expose the phloem, apply lanolin containing auxin-type agents to the incision, keep it moist with moss or the like, and wrap the outside with film to prevent water evaporation.
