Management Techniques for Preventing Frost and Water Damage in Walnut Trees in Winter

Walnut Tree
As winter arrives, to prevent walnuts from being damaged by frost and water, the management of walnuts becomes extremely important. The following measures are proposed for winter management techniques for walnuts:
1. Autumn plowing. Carry out deep plowing after fruit harvest and before leaf fall, to a depth of 30-40 cm, and at the same time pick out the walnut shoot-boring moth larvae from the soil and destroy them in a centralized manner.
2. Apply base fertilizer. Mainly use decomposed organic fertilizer, and apply it as early as possible during the period after fruit harvest and before leaf fall (it can be done together with deep plowing). Fertilizer amount: young trees 25-50 kg per tree, trees in the initial fruiting stage 50-100 kg per tree, trees in full fruiting stage 200-250 kg per tree.
3. Whitewash the tree trunks. Whitewashing tree trunks in autumn and winter can effectively control diseases and pests such as walnut rot, cloud-spotted longhorn beetle, and walnut tussock moth. The formula is: sulfur powder, lime, and water mixed in a ratio of 1:10:40.
4. Watering. Water with freezing water before the soil freezes.
5. Disease and pest control. Burn or deeply bury diseased branches, diseased leaves, and diseased fruits in a centralized manner, which can control diseases and pests such as the walnut small jewel beetle to a certain extent.
6. Overwintering protection for young trees. According to the different degrees of cold in winter, overwintering cold-protection measures such as soil burial, bundling straw bundles, and bundling newspapers can be adopted respectively. The soil burial method is to cut open both ends of a plastic woven bag, put it over the young tree, fill the middle with soil, and make the soil height 30 cm higher than the tree tip.
