Remedial measures for the "second bloom and fruiting" of Taiwan Honey Snow Pear

Honey Snow Pear

I recently visited a Taiwan Honey Snow Pear orchard in a certain town and found that many Taiwan Honey Snow Pear trees commonly show a rather serious phenomenon of second bloom and fruiting, which will have a major impact on the bloom and fruiting of the coming year. To reduce the losses caused by the second bloom and fruiting of Honey Snow Pear, the following remedial measures for the second bloom and fruiting of Honey Snow Pear are proposed:

    1. Strengthen cultivation management. For pear trees that have already bloomed a second time, promptly thin out the pear flowers and pear fruits and pinch off the growing tips of young shoots to reduce the consumption of tree nutrients. For trees that have already put out new shoots, spray 0.5% monopotassium phosphate once every 10 days to promote the maturation of new shoots. For trees with many opened flower buds, prune heavily to restore tree vigor, remove surplus large branches, and cut back and renew the aged fruiting branch groups; shorten more of the peripheral branches and lower branches to stimulate new growth. During winter pruning, retain flower buds as much as possible, and do not prune too heavily, so as to prevent the production of large numbers of water sprouts.

    2. Top grafting to change varieties or top grafting flowering branches. For inferior-variety orchards with a flower bud opening rate of more than 40% and tree age of about 3 to 4 years, top graft improved varieties or top graft flowering branches.

    3. Apply heavy base fertilizer and apply sprouting fertilizer early and in greater amounts. Apply heavy base fertilizer, supplemented with compound fertilizer; the base fertilizer should be applied early and deeply, mainly as organic fertilizer. The amount applied depends on the tree; based on an annual yield of 2000 to 2500 kg per mu, it is appropriate to apply 20 kg of pure nitrogen, 15 kg of pure phosphorus and 20 kg of pure potassium per mu, so as to supplement tree nutrients, strengthen tree vigor and improve the tree's disease resistance. Apply sprouting fertilizer appropriately early and in greater amounts to increase nutrient supply and improve the fruit set rate and shoot-producing capacity of the pear.

    4. Actively do a good job of winter orchard cleaning. Collect fallen leaves and pruned branches and burn them in a centralized manner to reduce the sources of pests and diseases for the coming year. Whitewash the trunks and spray 3 to 5 degrees of lime sulfur mixture.

    5. Protect flowers and fruits during the flowering period and rationally configure pollinizer trees. Use methods such as artificial pollination and spraying borax and plant growth regulators to increase the fruit set rate. Honey Snow Pear with rationally configured pollinizer trees has a high fruit set rate; Huanghua Pear can be used as the pollinizer tree, and the configuration ratio of Huanghua Pear to Honey Snow Pear is 1:5.
