Timely late harvest of corn works well: it can improve quality and increase yield

Corn yield increase

Timely late harvest of corn is an important technical step for increasing corn kernel weight, raising corn yield, improving corn quality, achieving higher grain output, increasing farmers' income and boosting agricultural efficiency.

    1. Late harvest can extend the grain filling period and increase corn yield. Only when corn is fully mature are the kernels largest and the yield highest. If harvest is delayed by 10 days, the yield can increase by more than 50 kg per mu, raising income by about 100 yuan per mu.

    2. Timely late harvest can not only increase the starch content in the kernels, but also increase the amino acid and protein content, thereby improving corn quality.

    3. Corn harvested at the right late time has plump, full and uniform kernels. Shriveled kernels are noticeably reduced, and the kernel moisture content is low, making threshing and storage easier.

So how do you determine the best harvest time for corn?

    1. Change the habit of harvesting as soon as the husks turn yellow, and strictly grasp the signs of full maturity in corn, namely the kernels become hard, the milk line of grain filling moves down to the base of the kernel and disappears completely, and the black layer forms at the base of the kernel. The kernels show the color and characteristics inherent to the variety, and the ear and husks become dry, loose and white.

    2. Delay harvest by 10 days, changing the customary harvest at 40-45 days after pollination to harvest at about 55 days after pollination. Make full use of the climate resources of the corn growth period, with clear autumn skies that favor dry matter accumulation, extend the grain filling time as much as possible, and let the potential kernel weight of corn be fully realized.

    3. Accurately grasp the date of full maturity of corn and actively promote mechanical harvesting. In our county, corn sowing is generally from late May to early June, and the harvest period is generally at the end of September and the beginning of October.
