Chemical weed control technology in corn fields saves labor, saves effort, requires low input, and delivers high benefits. In recent years, the area where post-emergence herbicides for corn are applied in China's corn-producing regions has been expanding year by year. Because some applicators lack adequate application skills, some fields have experienced herbicide damage of varying degrees and forms. Therefore, the following points should be noted when applying herbicides to corn seedlings:
1. Whether using soil pre-emergence treatment or post-emergence foliar treatment, light irrigation before application or rainfall before application improves the effect when the soil is dry.
2. Strictly follow the instructions; do not increase or decrease the dosage at will, and do not spray twice over the same area or miss areas, so as to avoid herbicide damage or reduced control efficacy.
3. Field application should be carried out on a windless and rainless day after 4 p.m., to avoid possible herbicide damage caused by wind, rain, and abnormally high temperatures.
4. Strictly control the application timing: for soil pre-emergence treatment, it should be done after sowing and before emergence; for post-emergence foliar treatment, it is best done at the 3-5 leaf stage of corn (about 15 days after sowing), so as to avoid applying too early (before the 3-leaf stage of corn), when volunteer wheat seedlings, sedges, and other weeds have not emerged uniformly, which reduces efficacy. If corn has more than 5 leaves, directional spraying should be used with the nozzle lowered, and the spray solution must never be sprayed onto the corn whorl; after the 7-leaf stage of corn, herbicide use is strictly prohibited.
5. Chemical weed control technology in corn fields is only suitable for sole-cropping corn fields; it is not suitable for relay-intercropping fields.
6. After soil pre-emergence treatment, people and livestock must not enter the field within 1 week, so as to avoid damaging the herbicide film and reducing control efficacy.
7. Whether for pre-emergence or foliar treatment, if rain occurs within 24 hours after application, respraying should be carried out.
8. When using post-emergence herbicides such as Qingxian and Yulianchun, they must not be mixed with any other pesticide; in particular, organophosphorus pesticides are strictly prohibited within 7 days before and after application. If pests need to be controlled during the corn seedling stage, non-organophosphorus pesticides such as Tianlongbao may be selected.
9. When using herbicides, perform secondary dilution, that is, calculate the required dosage according to the application area, first add a small amount of water to make a mother solution, then measure out an equal amount of the mother solution, add it to the sprayer, add water, and stir thoroughly.
10. When using herbicides, carefully clean the sprayer both before and after application, so as to avoid herbicide damage to the current crop or other crops.
