Cultivation Techniques for Large-Leaf Garland Chrysanthemum with Three Harvests a Year and High Returns

Garland chrysanthemum has a short growing period and is suitable for planting in fertile, loose sandy loam. For every 6 mu, use 2500-4000 kg of high-quality farmyard manure, 50-100 kg of superphosphate, and 50 kg of ammonium bicarbonate. Plow the soil deeply so that the soil and fertilizer are thoroughly and evenly mixed. After raking level, make beds 1-1.5 m wide.

Sowing:Large-leaf garland chrysanthemum is mostly direct-seeded. Both drilling and broadcasting can be used. To promote emergence, seeds can be soaked and pre-germinated. The method is to soak the garland chrysanthemum seeds in warm water for 24 hours, remove and drain them, then pre-germinate them at 15°C-20°C, and sow once the seeds show white sprouts. For broadcasting, sow 3-4 kg per mu; to increase yield and improve quality, the seeding rate can be increased to 5 kg per mu. For drilling, open furrows 1 cm deep in the bed at a row spacing of 15-20 cm and water thoroughly. About 2 kg of seed is used per mu. After sowing, cover with 1 cm of soil. Garland chrysanthemum sown in early spring should be covered with plastic film to protect against cold; in early autumn, when temperatures are relatively high and emergence is difficult, the seeding rate should be increased, and after sowing the garland chrysanthemum should be shaded to protect against high temperatures and sunlight, and watered daily to keep the soil moist.

    Field management

Thinning and weeding. When the garland chrysanthemum seedlings grow 1-2 true leaves, they should be thinned in time. For broadcast-sown garland chrysanthemum, the spacing of retained seedlings is 4 cm; for drilled garland chrysanthemum, the plant spacing is kept at 3-4 cm. While thinning, remove the weeds in the field. When raising seedlings for transplanting, the garland chrysanthemum can be transplanted when the seedling age reaches about 30 days, with a density of 16×10 cm as suitable.

Fertilizer and water management. For direct-seeded field planting, after thinning, when the second leaf of the garland chrysanthemum seedlings unfolds, the first watering can be given. For seedling raising and transplanting, within 2-3 days after transplanting, spray the garland chrysanthemum with 1-2 light waterings each day, then water lightly once each morning and evening until the seedlings recover. During the growing period, garland chrysanthemum cannot lack water, so the soil should be kept moist, but the field must not have standing water. When sowing in early spring, after the garland chrysanthemum seedlings emerge, water should be appropriately controlled to prevent damping-off disease. When the garland chrysanthemum plants grow to 10-12 cm, begin the first topdressing, using 10-20 kg of urea per mu, and irrigate immediately after topdressing.
