Four key points for strawberry propagation to ensure the quality of new seedlings

To ensure the quality of new strawberry seedlings, four key points must be observed in strawberry propagation

Entering June, strawberries enter the propagation season. To ensure the quality of new strawberry seedlings, the following points must be observed during the propagation of new strawberry seedlings:

Strawberry seedlings

    1. Intertillage and weeding. After the mother strawberry plants are planted, the rainy season begins. During this period, weeds grow vigorously. Therefore, when propagating strawberry seedlings, weeding must be done well to avoid the phenomenon of weeds encroaching on the seedlings.

    2. Soil moisture.Strawberry propagation is carried out by runners produced from the mother strawberry plants. Whether the runners can root and anchor in time is closely related to the soil moisture in the nursery; moist soil is conducive to root anchoring. Although strawberry propagation occurs during the rainy season, it also coincides with the high-temperature season, and the soil loses water quickly. If there are more than 10 consecutive days of high temperature and little rain, the soil will become dry, which is not conducive to the emergence and anchoring of runners, so soil moisture must be maintained.

    3. Regularly remove diseased, old and damaged leaves, and promptly remove the inflorescences on the mother plants.During strawberry propagation, old leaves, diseased leaves, etc. will continuously appear. The production of these diseased, old and damaged leaves contributes to the occurrence of strawberry pests and diseases. If they are not cleaned and removed in time, they will cause a high incidence of pests and diseases in the seedling nursery. In addition, the mother strawberry plants will produce new inflorescences during growth, consuming plant nutrients and being unfavorable to propagation, so they should be removed in time to increase the propagation rate.

    4. Timely topdressing.Sufficient nutrition helps the mother strawberry plants reproduce continuously. During the propagation process, topdressing must be applied continuously to meet the nutritional needs of strawberry propagation. Under the condition of applying sufficient base fertilizer, apply chemical fertilizer twice before the end of July. The first time is around July 10, applying 15-20 kg per mu of a mixed fertilizer of diammonium phosphate and urea (2:1); the second time is at the end of July, applying 15-20 kg per mu of a nitrogen:phosphorus:potassium (15:15:15) compound fertilizer.
