July: How to Manage Summer Peanuts During Vigorous Growth

Entering July, thunderstorms increase, and peanuts enter the vigorous growth stage. The key management points are intertillage and weeding, foliar topdressing, chemical regulation, and pest and disease control. The specific measures are:

Peanut

    1. Intertillage and Weeding

Peanuts should be intertilled and loosened at the right time to promote root penetration and suppress weed regrowth. Peanuts need 3-4 intertillages during the growth period. After the peanuts have fully emerged, carry out the first intertillage together with seedling clearing; the intertillage should be shallow to avoid burying the seedlings. Carry out the second intertillage 15-20 days after seedling clearing; the intertillage should be deep to help the roots extend downward. The third and fourth intertillages should be completed before the rows close.

    2. Foliar Topdressing

To prevent peanuts from running short of nutrients, spray the leaves 1-2 times with 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate and 2% urea.

    3. Chemical Regulation

During the peanut growth period, if hot and rainy weather occurs, the plants are prone to excessive growth. When peanut plants exceed 40cm in height, promptly use the chemical regulator Peanut Aifeng (25 grams/mu) mixed with 15-30 kg of water and spray it on the leaves at the early flowering stage or pegging stage to control excessive growth; the yield increase generally reaches more than 20%.

    4. Peanut Pests and Diseases

   (1) Peanut Diseases

These mainly include damping-off, root rot, stem rot, peanut leaf spot, peanut rust, and so on. For damping-off, root rot, and stem rot, spray the leaves with a 1000-fold dilution of 50% strong fungicide; for peanut leaf spot, at the early stage of the disease, spray a 800-fold dilution of 50% carbendazim once every 7 days, for a total of 2 to 3 sprays; for peanut rust, at the early stage of the disease, spray the whole field with a 600-fold dilution of 75% chlorothalonil wettable powder.

   (2) Peanut Pests

These are mainly root-knot nematodes, white grubs, peanut aphids, red and white spiders, and so on. For peanut root-knot nematode disease, at the early stage of occurrence, drench the roots with a 3000-fold dilution of abamectin; at the early stage of red and white spider occurrence in peanuts, spray the leaves with a 3000-fold dilution of abamectin; to control peanut white grubs, from late June to early July, mix 50-100 grams of 50% phoxim emulsifiable concentrate per mu with 3-4 kg of bait and scatter it in the planting furrows. For leaf-eating pests such as cotton bollworm and measuring worm during the mid-growth stage of peanuts, spray a mixture of 2.5% beta-cyhalothrin emulsifiable concentrate + 50% chlorpyrifos emulsifiable concentrate at a 1500-2000-fold dilution for control.
